Well, I found a new Samsung PATA ZIF 40GB 4200 HS040HB. It included shipping from the Orient, all for $22. I formatted it, loaded XP-Tablet, booted to a 2010 warning, ignored the warning, let XP-T boot then it crashed. Is that par for a hdd with a 2010 warning? Is there any rhyme or reason to why one drive will 2010 and not another? Has anyone compiled a list of compatible hdd's for the X41-T? Lots of questions!

My HS040HB stopped working too. The only thing I can think of in my case is ESD damage. The HS122JC is still working.

@BobA, the picture links have been fixed. We're currently looking for a new home/server for these pictures. If anyone has any storage space out there please let me know. The current size of the forum pictures folder is 61MB.

Some help needed !

I have tried to get a 60 Gbyte Toshiba MK6008GA (ex ipod) zif drive working in my x40 but have not suceded. Before modifying the IDE to zif adapter for 3.3v I used the adapter in a usb enclosure to load a copy of the disc image from my old drive to the zif drive using Acronis. This worked as expected. After modifing the adapter and installing the zif drive in the X40 the drive was recognised (listed in the bios startup devices) but the x40 would not boot from the drive. After entering the bios the x40 hangs up with just a display of (about 12) garbage characters on the screen.

I also tried the drive and adapter in an x41 with same result except for the additional 2010 error on startup.

Any ideas where I may have gone wrong ?
Have I messed up the adpter mod ?
Is the bios somehow blocking the drive from being accessed ?

any advice welcome, thanks,

Eric

Sometimes you must clone to a new drive that is installed 'in' the Thinkpad, not to an external. In other words, remove the old drive, install the new one, then clone.

Hi, thanks for that advice but I did also try cloning to the drive once it was installed in the x40 and I still got the exact same problem. The drive was seen by acronis and showed up in the x40 bios boot list but it would not boot - and the same garbage ascii string displayed on the screen.

If F11 option shows up, try to do a Recovery operation. The music players drives may have some non-standard headers.

I second F11 advice. Just did a X61 Tablet hard drive swap using True Image Home 2009. The new hard drive did not boot up after cloning. I went back to the old drive, did a backup of all system files via rescue and recovery . Then I clone the old drive again. Upon booting up, press F11 to enter into service partition and restore system files from my latest backup.

Upon restore completion, the new drive boots up instantly.

Did not have this problem for some reason on a Vista hard drive.

I presume the F11 rescue and recovery procedure uses the IBM recovery partition. I don't have this on my discs any longer (I prefer to use Acronis to backup via disc images) so I won't be able to try this. I will have to see if there is another way to be able to utilise an ipod Zif drive in a thinkpad as simply restoring a disc image is obviously not sufficient- again any suggestions would be welocme. Thanks for the advice so far.

Then try DOS level fdisk and reformat it.
