Compatibility of Celeron to Pentium

#1 Post by proaudioguy » Thu Dec 04, 2008 3:29 pm

I have a system with a Celeron SL7D6 processor. I can't find the processor listed on Intel's site. I'm trying to figure out which group of Pentium 4 processors are compatible. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. I have a P4 laying around, but I don't want to damage it if it's not compatible. They are about the same Clock and probably the same bus speed. This I could verify.

This Celeron has a 128Meg cache and a 400MHz bus.

I have replaced a couple of celerons with P4's. The thing to look at first is the motherboard, check the documentation to see what is compatible. Also check the BIOS version to see if there are more current versions, usually the most current will accept the faster processors. most any P4 with the same bus speed and pin type will work.

Of course this has just been my experience.

Mobile Cel 2.66 Ghz 400 Mhz 128kb 478 Pin

That looks like it should match the Pentium 4M Northwood processors which are 400MHz FSB and 478 Pin

Pentium M processors are 479 pin
Z61t - C2D 2GHz CPU - 3GB RAM - 320GB HDD - 14.1" WXGA+ - Intel 950 - Travel Bezel

It's not a mobile celeron. It's a desktop celeron 2.60. It appears to be an OEM part for Toshiba since it's not in the list. Toshiba has been known to put desktop processors in computers. The computer is 2004. My parrents gave it to us because they had reached the end with it. The hinges need to be replaced, the power cable looks like the dog chewed through it (I repaired that already). The screen is also somewhat dim and pinkish. My dad put a lot of hours on this thing. It has a huge heat sink with heat pipes, and a full size fan.

It physically looks like this http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Celeron_D ... SL87J).jpg but the text is different. It says something sorta like this.....

INTEL 2001
CELERON
2.60GHZ/128/400
SL7D6
etc etc

Perhaps there will be no real benefit to putting the P4 in there.

It's a laptop so it's hard to say what the motherboard is. Toshiba is notorious for using desktop components in semi mobile computers. My wife's old satalite had a desktop PIII 1.13. Come to think of it, I need to part that out.

Whether it's a laptop or a desktop really doesn't matter. Most celerons can be swapped for a P4. since you can't find any documentation there is only one way to find out if it will work.
If you switch them and they are not compatible it won't boot, I doubt it will damage the processor. with an older machine like that you may run into heat problems P4's run much hotter that celerons.

Thank you guys. Maybe I'll give it a shot. The celeron 2.6 seems a lot slower than a P4m at a slower clock.

I'm convinced that this is one of the reason I had so many cooling problems with the pair of Toshiba Satellites I owned before switching to IBM. Take the hottest running Thinkpads you can imagine, then add 10 degrees C. Then make the heatsink clog up with dust if you look at it wrong. Don't miss those days...
