R52 Celeron -> PM Processor Upgrade = No Video

#1 Post by mrjonescu » Thu Dec 04, 2008 6:36 pm

Tried dropping in a PM (Centrino) processor into my r52. Ive tried 2 different PM processors with the same result. Each time, the laptop starts (lights, fan, etc.), but no boot screen or video of any kind.

When I put the celeron back in, it works fine.

Any ideas? Do I need to do something in the system BIOS (upgrade, etc).

Thanks!

P4Ms will not work, PMs will (no 4). If you were actually sticking P4s in there, that would explain things. Lack of bios update will just cause reduced speed.

Correction: Not a P4M, but a PM Processor, taken out of a T42.

What is the machine type and model of that R52, please? Also, if you can, the processor number of the Celeron and PM processors? Bus speeds? That will help us help you better. I read a thread here about this topic but can't find it right now. Try the search box above.

Edit: I found some threads about this. They seem to say it should work with a Dothan PM that's not too fast and has a 400MHz bus (say, 1.6GHz).

See this thread --> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=32829

From my experience, 400MHz bus Pentium M's work OK, the 533MHz bus Pentium M's do not. (The Celeron's in R52's were 400MHz bus chips.)

And the T42's use 400mhz chips, so your new cpu's are not supposed to work in your R52 because it uses a 533mhz processor, search for a pentium 760 or 780.

The OP needs to post the type and model number of his R52 and preferably the MB FRU# as well. This model used a wide variety of CPUs and MBs, 400Mhz, 533Mhz, Pentium M and Celeron M.

Sorry for the delay.

The R52 is a 1860-C7U

Celeron M 360(1.4GHz), 256MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel 900, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11bg wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, IEEE 1394, 6 cell Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

Processor: FRU 39T5385

The T42 that donated the process was a 2379-DWU
Processor: PM 1.5 - FRU 26P8533

Again, the machine will attempt to run (fans, lights, etc) but no video or boot screen.

Thanks for the help!

Celeron M uses 400Mhz bus and the P M CPU you tried is also 400Mhz.

Your R52 type/model number called for MB FRU39T5649

A search of all type/model that use this MB yielded as following:

1858-92x
1858-AGx
1858-AHx
1860-C6x
1860-C7x
1861-C6x
1861-C7x

All these type/models use Celeron M 360/370. So I think you are limited to Celeron M by the BIOS on this board. The fastest Celeron for R52 is the 380.

Well...maybe it has to be a newer, Dothan Pentium M to be supported. The 1.5 from a T42 would probably be a Banias variety. I'd try a Dothan 400MHz bus Pentium M and see what happens.

Did you upgrade a similar system that you ended up putting a 725a Dothan CPU in?
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

Thanks for you response, everyone.

I'll make sure I have the latest version of BIOS, and try again one more time. If it still doesn't work, I'll see if i can find a new processor for fairly cheap.

The machine is still under warranty, maybe I can call the support center and get some info there (as long as putting in new hardware doesn't void the warranty).

Thanks again!
