I own the same machine.
By far the coolest running ThinkPad I have owned.
If I didn't already own one I would buy it.

Good Luck!

I believe it will take all common intel socket P Merom like T7100/T7250/T7300/T7500/T7700.

It will also take slower 667 fsb cpu like T5250/T5450.

With the right bios and motherboard revision, it will take the Penryn like T8100/T8300 etc.

I might have miss other less known socket P mobile cpu too.

I myself have an exact same model R61E and have just upgraded to a T5450 cpu ( from Celeron 540 ), bought from a forum member.

Hope this helps.

I got someone who's been asking me to help find a notebook. I think this would be a good fit. I'll ask, but she never can make her mind up.

Presumably this means it will take a Socket P Merom without mods?

Re. BIOS & mobo revs to take a Penryn, can you be more specific please?

Some more recent R61e do come with T8100/T8300, so we know that some mobo revision CAN take the newer Penryn cpu. Someone had success on upgrading to T8xxx cpu while others got the bootup beep even with the latest bios. There doesn't seem to have any definitive answer on how to determine which machine can be upgrade. So far the one that can be upgrade seems to be manufactured after March 08 and have mobo revision C??

In the mean time, my cheapo upgrade to a T5450 still sees improvement on speed, and the added enhanced speedstep will probably give longer battery time, although I haven't measure it myself yet. Like the other member have said, this machine runs really cool and quiet. If you don't need to move around with this laptop often, this is really the one to get.

Btw, all I've done is pop in the new cpu, no "mods" needed.
