WinMe on A31P R5U...

#1 Post by suandmarc » Fri Jan 14, 2005 11:56 am

Has anyone installed Me on the A31p and successfully identified the one or two Unknown Devices which exist? Although the system runs acceptably well, the unknown devices in Device Manager are somewhat annoying. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Look on IBM's support site at all of their drivers and then look at the ones you've installed on your ThinkPad. By process of elimination, you should be able to figure out what those devices are.
ThinkPad T60: 2GHZ CD T2500, 3gb RAM, 14.1" XGA, 60gb 7k100, Win 7 Ult
Latitude E7250: i5 5300U 2.3ghz, 12gb RAM, 12" 1080p touch, 256gb SSD, Win 10

I have installed all of the available drivers, updates, etc which IBM makes available, to no avail. When running XP on the machine (it is dual bootable), there are no issues. XP seems to do a more comprehensive job of dealing with whatever the device(s) are. I am hoping to find someone who has lucked on to a solution. I have searched far and wide for an answer, including the INTERNET, my REGISTRY, and Microsoft's Knowledge Base. The closest lead I have is in the System Info file which alludes to a PnP device (IBM0069), but I have found no details or clarification. I have a similar issue with Win98SE, but even less info is available from the system itself.

If you have a computer that runs at at least 166mhz and have no need to run DOS apps, WinME can be a good OS. You spend less time on Windows update on a fresh install since it's a newer OS and you get system restore as well as some slight tweaks to the GUI and some extra system functionality, but on newer computers, Windows XP, if you have a copy is the way to go.

What you should do with your laptop is go into device manager and delete the two unknown devices and see if Windows redetects it.

Unfortunately, XP's Compatibility Mode does not work for some applications which were designed around older operating systems.

Both 98SE and Me re-detect the unknown devices.

There's simply no good reason for anyone to install WinME...ever.

Win ME

I concur... Win ME just slows down your machine and eats up RAM with tons of MS ornaments, totally unecessary. Win98SE will be faster, leaner and
more bug free, and I don't recall any functional advantage that ME has
(other than fancier logos and annoying active content)

looks like a 'marketing release' of windows to bridge the consumer awareness gap to Win2000 which was a bit late.. (well, to do justice with microsoft, some other 2000 projects were also late.. the Israeli "Ben Gurion 2000" project that completely redesigned the international airport, only opened a few months ago to the public... )

I agree with everyone who said negative things about WinME. Why in the world did Microsoft come up with that crap. My ME disc is on a Mobile along with AOL discs. Anyway, if you want some type of program that has restore points (like ME and XP), then get ConfigSafe. it works very well and has saved my butt a few times with Win2000Pro. It is suppose to work on Win98SE as well.
