DVD drive not reading DVDs

#1 Post by syrenab » Mon Dec 08, 2008 11:13 am

I have T40 2376-4U1 with Matshita UJDA 755z DVD/CDRW drive.
Worked perfectly until just recently.

Windows Media Player reads internet movies, audio CDs and data CDs, but when DVD disc inserted in drive it stops responding, just hourglass icon .

I reinstalled Windows INtervideo WinDVD software with latest update from Lenovo Thinkpad site, but it reports
"create Overlay failed. Lower screen resolution and try again"
Have done this with no result, same message.

Have checked Device Manager, but reports all DVD driver working correctly
Not hardware problem, because external DVD drive doing exactly same.
Any suggestions, anybody? This happened after using some CD/DVD editing software, which I have since uninstalled.

I have had several do this, but it is always hardware.
Can you see files on the drive if you use Explorer?

Also I recommend that you run the PC-Doctor DVD tests on this drive.

It is not hardware problem. The drive plays and records CDs. Also plays audio tracks from DVD.
And of course in Windows explorer shows all files on DVDs.

Hmmm, what is your oldest system restore point? Try falling back to it. Be prepared to install whatever you've installed since then.
