Mouse button stuck "on"?

#1 Post by db » Fri Jan 14, 2005 5:27 pm

Hi all,

I am embarassed to ask this, but I am brand new to laptops and thinkpads. Just got a T42 today and I am finding that, in a random and unpredictable fashion, simply scrolling over an icon or checkbox and lingering there for a couple of seconds causes the computer to read it as having been clicked. In other words, the left mouse button is acting as if it has been depressed when it hasn't. Hope this makes sense to you all. Am I missing something basic? I looked at the various settings for the buttons and find nothing helpful. It is not set for automatic click and drag. Do I need to call IBM service?

In case anyone keeps a tally, I have one dead pixel and my wrist pad creaks as well.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

DB

I'd try updating the drivers for the pointing devices first. If that doesn't work, it's probably a hardware problem.

I'd recommend returning it if it's a hardware problem. You shouldn't have to send a brand new computer in for service.

Where is the dead pixel located? And are you sure it's dead? Sometimes the ultra nav drivers cause them to stick. If you're not positive, hit the middle trackpoint button a few times, and see if it goes away. It's the button with the blue stripe on it.

Double-click on My Computer, click on the Tools pull-down menu and choose "Folder Options." In the section titled "Click items as follows" select "Double-click to open an item (single-click to select) and click OK.

Thanks, all. What a helpful forum!

So, I won't bother anyone with any more dumb questions until I make my way through the ibm access stuff. Turns out I had a very sensitive setting on the touch pad settings. I disabled touch pad taping and voila, no more problem. Guess this ultranav thing is higher tech than I had imagined.

The dead pixel is real, unfortunately. It's in a prominent spot but if I had stayed away from forums like this I would never have noticed it. Other than the reasonable perspective that one should be able to obtain a perfect lcd on an expensive item and the fact that it is a bit disturbing on an aesthetic level, is there any practical reason to return the computer and hope for a new one with a perfect lcd? This is a business machine, though I will do some photoshopping with it.

Thanks again for the help.

As far as I know, there are definitely people on this forum who live with their dead/stuck pixels. I had one on my first TP, and I was ready to live with it, then the computer just died. My second one had a stuck red pixel front and center in the middle of the screen. I don't mind dead pixels overall, but that was just so [censored] annoying. They worked out a deal with me, and now, luckily my 3rd TP is perfect.

If the pixel isn't right in the middle, or doesn't bother you that much, you might as well keep it. As far as I know, they don't mean that you will get more later, or anything like that. For all I know, I could get one that appears tomorrow, and stays forever.

I have a dead red pixel on the far right side of the screen on my 760. It was like that when I got it about a month ago, for all I knopw, it could have been there since 1996 or since two days after I got it. It turns white on a bright background, but is visible and red on everything else, and it's not the ultranav drivers either, because this is years before that. Try changing your desktop background/wallpaper to something bright, see if the pixel is still as noticable.
