Power Supply question

#1 Post by Kyocera » Thu Dec 11, 2008 2:03 pm

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has used their T42 16V 4.5A power supply to power thier X31 [16V 3.38A]. In theory it should work but I am asking if anyone is currently or has in the past done this without damaging your x31. Thanks.

I remember reading somewhere that a laptop will only 'take' as much power as it needs. That is, if it needs 15V to run that's all it will take from a 16V power supply. There can be problems the other way around though, needs 16V but only gets 15V.
There seems to be a large power flexibility built into all laptops.
I run an X40, an A20M and a T42 as well as a 240 (as I need them) from the T42 power adapter, so far not a hiccup out of any of them.

The X31 should be fine with the T42 power supply because it has the same voltage and sufficient amperage. tim S has the right idea but it applies only to amps, not volts. Voltage must be the same (16V) for each device. If amps are too low, battery might not charge, operation might be sluggish, electronic components might burn out, etc. If amps are higher, the ThinkPad will only use what it needs, just like when you plug your AC adapter that uses 1.9 amps at 120 volts into a 15 or 20 Amp wall receptacle.
