#1 Post by madmaven » Thu Dec 11, 2008 4:56 pm

Got delivered an old 701c instead of the A31 i ordered on the bay. it boots to the bios and has 128 ram. I am wondering if it is worth it to try to figure a way to get an os on it. my cutoff is about 266 to 366 mhz. did it have a dock with a cd in it b/c ther is no usb for external. anyone have any info? thanks

No 701C has 128MB RAM, maximum is 40MB.

Actually, the max is 64mb... See this thread, even though it isn't the one that I was looking for. I believe that Bill Morrow has a 64mb stick in one of his.

The machine boots and registers 11904kb memory in the display.
then I get the non system disk or disk error message(of course need O/S
what does the kb translate to in MB I thought 119mb but my math is really bad
I also read that it was probably a 75mhz processor.
I read a little about the DSL, [censored] Small Linux, working well on these old machines. Has anyone tried that?

KB = kilobytes, MB = megabytes. Kilo = 1000 (one thousand). Mega = 1,000,000 (one million).

Roughly speaking, there are 1000 Bytes in 1 KiloByte and there are 1000 KiloBytes in 1 MegaByte.

So 11,904 KiloBytes = about 12 MegaBytes.

I still have Win 95 on mine, that's the way Bill (Morrow) sold it to me and it's pretty fast...for DX486/75, that is...

From what I recall, you can run 98 with no issues with 40MB RAM, everything after that is a stretch...

Now, I have yet to test any Linux on it, but am certain that there must be something that will work...
