X20 doesn't power up - maybe?

I bought a X20 off a guy who said his HD died. He said the drive was making knocking sounds before it died altogether. So I assumed all this machine needed was a new HD. Before installing the replacement drive, I attempted to power up and inspect the BIOS settings. All the indicators light for a few seconds (lamp test?) and the fan spins for a few more before settling down. Then, only the power and battery lights are on but the screen is dark and there is no external video. After about another minute, the fan does start to spin as the CPU warms up. There are never any beeps. (However, I have a working X20 that doesn't beep either.)

I swapped the LCD into a good X20 and it works. The battery charging circuit works and can distinguish charge level. I started disconnecting peripheral devices from the motherboard to no avail.

Am I spinning my wheels trying to repair this thing? Is this just another case of systemboard meltdown? Any and all advice is appreciated.

Power off, remove the battery, and remove the RAM. Power up, does it beep?

I've had the battery, backup battery, and expansion RAM out, but not the onboard RAM. That too? Is that under the mainboard?

Ah, I forgot the X20 has 64MB non-removeable RAM. Does anything show up on an external monitor?
