T23 - thin vertical white line on LCD

#1 Post by g8tzl » Mon Dec 15, 2008 11:09 am

I have just acquired a T23.

There is a thin vertical white line going from the top to bottom of the LCD. The white line is about 1/8 inch thick (maybe a bit smaller) and is located about 1.5 inches from the right hand side edge.

I have checked out the archives re. possible causes :
- system board video issue
- LCD flex cable
- LCD display

I checked out the T23 using an external monitor and the display is perfect.

I have a 570 with an LCD flex cable problem - this causes intermitant flickering due I guess to a poorly seated cable - with a bit of careful pressing to the lid , the display is restored - one day I will reseat the cable :) I don't have this problem with the T23 - the white vertical line is very constant and pressing the lid has no effect.

When you look carefully at the white line , there is also some yellow and reddish partial lines within the thicker white line.

When the white line passes through an images eg. on the tool bar , you can see a very weak partial image within the white line if you look carefully.

Any thoughts? I'm guessing its an actual LCD problem rather than the flex cable. Is there any fix? Any idea what causes the problem?

Thanks

You could try another LCD cable (cheap on eBay) and get lucky.
Make sure you get the proper XGA (or SXGA+) cable. The number will be on the old cable.
If not, you are most likely looking at a new/used LCD.

Could be a worn LCD cable (quite possible), laptop may have been dropped/roughly handled, someone may have poked at the LCD with a sharp object, it could have been a cold solder joint inside the LCD (rarely), maybe some part got shorted temporarily, any number of other causes...
