Warranty Question! Please Read!

#1 Post by VinnieZ » Mon Dec 15, 2008 11:33 am

Hey guys,
I recently posted about problems with my T41. I replaced the CFL, the inverter, and the video cable. I could not get the laptop to work, just lines on the screen. But I was just contacted by my IBM rep about extending my warranty. It would be $150 for another year. But I just want to know if they will fix it even though I took it into my own hands and took it apart. Right now I have the screen taken off but I can probably get it back together (for the most part). I just want to confirm that they will fix it even though you can probably tell that I took it apart and fussed with it.

Can anyone please help? Let me know. Thanks!

I would guess no. Aside from the ethics, it would be high risk as to if it would be covered.
For a few dollars more, you can buy a entire T41 or T42 and then sell off your parts or keep it for spares.
Or just replace your lcd screen (cheapest solution)

zdriver, what do you suggest my best plan is? Where can I buy a new T41 or T42?

I am debating just buying this from ebay:

But is there a way I can test to see if it is the screen? If I hook it up to an external monitor, and it works, does that mean that it is just a problem with the monitor? And vice versa, if it doesnt work, does that mean it is the GPU?

A new one would be tough to find, but for a new to you one, I would check your local craigslist or watch the marketplace ad's for a good deal.
edit: you changed your post about where you can find a new laptop

I accidentally deleted that post zdriver. But, like I was saying:

If the thinkpad worked before you messed with the backlight replacement, it should work again with a replacement screen. Connecting a external monitor will help improve the comfort level that it is indeed the lcd, but you must not have easy access to one or you would have done that by now. (the lcd gets a digital signal as opposed to the analog external port output)
If you have a dock or port replicator, you could connect a dvi driven external lcd display and you would know for sure.

The ebay ad for $53 total does not inspire much confidence in the working condition of the display and it is probably xga, although, going by the picture, it is the complete lid assembly so would be an easy installation.

In my area on craigslist $250 T43, $50 xsga+ !4' screen
In your area (I assume Philadelphia PA and not OA) T41 $250, T42 $299, T60 $325 (probably gone though)

zdriver, thank so much for your help. It is PA, not OA.

I do have access to a regular external monitor (an older one) and also new LCD monitor. I shall try this as soon as I get home and see if it works.

I dont have a port replicator. Is there any other way I can try it with the LCD screen?

Nope, not without the dvi connection on the dock / replicator....
