where can I buy an ultrabay slim hdd adaptor
I have a T40, so I think I need one of these : marketing part 62P4554, replacement part FRU 62P4553, see http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 46460.html
As far as I can make out Lenovo no longer sell this, so any ideas where I can get one ? (I'm in the UK).
Admin edit: Corrected URL (removed the "." at the end)

Using this search string at http://www.ebay.co.uk/
"ultrabay slim (hard,hd,adapter) -sata"
there's currently 19 units available for shipment to the UK (from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan). The China and Hong Kong suppliers appear to be selling knock-offs, based on the pictures, descriptions and price (~ £9 shipping included). The Taiwan eBay seller shows a genuine IBM adapter (and specifies the 62P4554 FRU) but the cost is £30.

Until recently, Lenovo was still selling them (at least here in the US). Had I known they were discontinuing them, I would have bought a couple. I'm probably going to try one of the cheap Chinese ones myself.amardeep wrote:Thanks for the replies. I'm kinda surprised Lenovo don't sell these, they would fit a whole load of old but not that old models. I might try a Chinese knock-off since it's cheap and there's no other obvious option.
I got one from eBay recently from a place in Hong Kong: wholesale-cn and it seems to be the IBM one itself - if it's a copy it's a darned good one!
Not sure why it comes with screws though, since the drive just clips in place!
Cheers,
Howard

Here's what I would consider a genuine IBM Ultrabay Slim HD adapter to be:
http://www.kawakami-ca.com/images/ub_sl ... er_top.jpg
http://www.kawakami-ca.com/images/ub_sl ... bottom.jpg
If the bottom panel is missing or is made of plastic, then I'd think that would be a knock-off. If there is the word "For", next to the IBM logo, then that would be a knock-off as well.

Yup! That's exactly what the one I got looks like - very much like the one I have for my T23, but thinner and with the "slim" connector.rkawakami wrote:Here's what I would consider a genuine IBM Ultrabay Slim HD adapter to be:

No, it's metal, and the IBM logo is as it should be.rkawakami wrote:If the bottom panel is missing or is made of plastic, then I'd think that would be a knock-off. If there is the word "For", next to the IBM logo, then that would be a knock-off as well.

I'd like to add a small comment here: Recently (a few months back); I ordered a couple of IDE UltraBay Slim HDD adapters from Lenovo/Denmark, and I received P/N 41N5661 (FRU 41N5660). It does neither says "IBM", nor does it say "Lenovo" anywhere on it. Recently when I used one of these in a T42, I couldn't pull it out again?! It was simply too "fat" to pull out; I pulled the extractor-tab beneath all I dared, but the HDD apapter refused to come out. So, being afraid to damage anything I finally had to take off the keyboard (!) to gain access to the UltraBay adapter from within - and then managed to push it out. So, I'd certainly say that this (genuine Lenovo!) part/version must be outside its mechanical specifications.
If you dare it, you can get the 41N5661 very cheap, e.g. here (Google around yourself to find other places!).
I have another, older "identical" HDD adapter (IBM branded), having ASM 62P4554 and FRU 62P4553. That one never had these problems; is slides in and out without troubles or the need for any excessive pulling-force.
Note that the never Lenovo HDD UltraBay adapters (IDE/PATA) also come with P/N 41U3148 (FRU 41N5661).

Johan,
Can you send of picture of that adapter to me? (Use the email link in my posts). I'm curious as to the construction and especially the labeling of that version. That eBay seller you referred to appears to have a picture of an Ultrabay 2000 2nd hard drive adapter in the description.

Ultrabay slim ATA HDD adaptor
I bought one from IBM a few months ago.... im pretty sure they have it on their site too..
And yes Mine does not have any sign of an IBM, Lenovo logo on it, it came to me directly from IBM india with the floppy drive cloning software.
this is the FRU P/N: 41N5661 (Made in philippines)

Following this thread, I bought such a HDD caddy on Ebay.co.uk on the 16th of december from a seller called ehkseller to a price of UKL 3.99 plus postage to Denmark 4.99 UKL, so a total of 8.98 UKL.
Well, it arrived here today, it is obviously a original with IBM logo, and instructions leaflet attached, looks new and the good news is that it worked "out of the box" (which was just a padded envelope).
So at the going rate of the British pound to Euro-linked currencies, I find this a pretty good deal
Only mystery is a small plastic sachet with 4 countersunk maschine screws which do not have any obvious use?
Happy New Year to you all!
