T500, Lenovo device discovery Error (Suprised ? No ;-)

#1 Post by WarhawkCZ » Mon Dec 15, 2008 4:46 pm

Hi again,

maybe you know me, becouse I fill this forum with my problems with T500 :D every week.

Not only Presentation Director doesn't work properly. I installed Lenovo System Toolbox via ThinkUpdate (and directly from lenovo webpage), but it doesn't work. When I start this application, there is few windows with Terms and conditions agreement and after that, It shows

""Device Discovery Error

Your system was busy performing other task when {title} attempted to collect information.

Click OK and restart the application.

If the error persists, restart the system.""

Exactly same problem like this man :

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... f75908a84c

Obviously I turned off antivirus, firewall and other funny stuff.

Is there any solution, after year ?! Is anybody satisfied with lenovo software ? My roomate with z61m has lot similar problems (everything works, but nothink without problem !) but he isn't rigorous like me and he don't care...

Thank you for answer

You should have had the option to burn a rescue and recovery DVD containing the toolbox. try running that to see if you have a hardware problem.

Same problem occurs on my W500.

I discovered that if I UNINSTALL Firefox 3.0.5, the Lenovo System Toolbox runs just fine.

This is reversible - if I then REINSTALL Firefox, the "Device Discovery Error" recurs, and if I RE-UNINSTALL Firefox, all is well.

So, on my W500 at least, there is an incompatibility between Firefox and Lenovo System Tools. Note carefully, it is not necessary that Firefox be running when Lenovo System Toolbox fails, just that it be installed.

Unfortunately this is the sort of problem that neither supplier is going to care very much about.

Hope this workaround helps someone.

Broadly speaking - Yes. Some niggling issues, but (1) nothing causes any crashes and (2) nothing stops me working. T61p however. .... JDH
