R61: is my fan dying?

#1 Post by slname » Wed Dec 17, 2008 1:58 am

A week ago, something strange happened to my laptop. I almost never move it from my desk, but this time I used it in another room (also on a desk), and afterward returned it to my desk (it was turned off in both transfers).

I sometimes leave it running overnight for torrent seeding etc, and this time noticed I couldn't sleep from all the noise. Usually, it's so quiet that the external HDD is louder than it, but this time the fan made horrible noises. I immediately switched the computer off and bought a can of compressed air the next day. Before I bought the compressed air, I blew the fan a couple of times, but it didn't really help, and I also got one "fan error" message when trying to boot it.

I opened the laptop partialy, but found that it was too complex to reach the fan so I just sprayed it with air through the grill on the sides.

Now it's much better, but it still doesn't feel like before, there's a little buzz, nothing too loud but I notice the difference.

I want to service it and it's still under warranty, but I'm worried they'll say it's all fine. Is there a tool I can test my fan with, to make sure if it's fine or not? Sorry for the long post...

please, anyone?

I don't want to give my laptop away for 10+ days only to be told that there's nothing wrong with it...

is the fan error message I got once written in any log permanently?

The only fan test I am aware of is contained in the program PC-Doctor.

If you are sure it's the fan making the noise, then send it in for repair.
