T30 - Shutdowns after 3 seconds
T30 - Shutdowns after 3 seconds
My T30 2366-41U worked great other than a bad screen. I took everything apart and bought another screen with inverter and cable. I want to make sure the screen works before I spend alot of time putting it all back together so I plugged the screen in, mini PCI adapter, memory, keyboard, touchpad, hard drive, backup battery and main battery. Everything electically was put back together and if it all worked including the screen, I would put all the screws back in place and snap it all together.
When I do that it turns on for about 3 seconds, the IBM logo comes up on the screen so it looks like that works fine but then it shuts down. What did I do wrong and what could cause that? I pulled the memory out a couple of times which didnt change anything.

Did you take the CPU cooler off, then put it back on with fresh thermal paste?
The symptoms sound like an overheating CPU.

how did you dismatle it without taking out the cpu cooler?
anyways - take it out (3 screws only - after removeing just the keyboard) - clean the pocessor's and heatsink's contact areas with some alcohol, apply fresh thermal paste - power it up and see what happens

Re: T30 - Shutdowns after 3 seconds
I wiped the dust off this project and decided to resurrect it once again. The T30 turns on and works fine with an external monitor. I power down, unhook the external monitor, plug in the either the old screen or the new screen, plug the keyboard back in and power up. Every time I do that even with the old screen that works fine, the T30 shuts down after 3 secs. The only way it fires up with the laptop screen plugged in is with the external monitor plugged in too. When it starts it uses the external screen. Ifi hit Fn-7 to switch over to the laptop screen, it shuts off again.
To me its almost like their is a short in the laptop conection but that can't be right. Any ideas cause I really need to get this fixed.

Your LCD cable is most likely shorting. They are relatively cheap to replace, but you'll need to take the lid apart, and remove keyboard and KB-bezel.

Well I have the whole laptop open already so that shouldnt be a problem I just dont see how my old cable/screen is suddenly shorting and my new screen/inverter/cable is too.

I didn't get that you had two complete lids.
In that case try and clean the LCD connector on the mobo with compressed air.
Also do a visual, to see if any contacts are bent.
Also check the fuses around the LCD connector.
There are other posts about this same subject, use the "Search" function.

If you are still running the T30 partly assembled, then it might be worth it to attach the speakers -
the machine might be sending you a beep code that you do not hear.
And what is the condition of the lid switch?

I'd also look at the top of the motherboard, just below where any of the screws are installed. Not sure about the T30's setup, but I've (still) got an A31p with damage to motherboard that was caused when somebody used a longer than normal screw and took out at least one part on the board.
