EEPROM with CRC1

#1 Post by winslow » Thu Dec 18, 2008 1:00 am

This may be a really stupid question but I'll go ahead and ask it anyway. A workmate asked me to look at his T21 and see if I could get it working as I just brought about three T23's back from the dead.
It seems he had a power problem and is now getting the bad CRC1 message. I understand that the only way to remedy this is to change either the EEPROM or the entire motherboard.
Is it possible to use a EEPROM from one of my dead T23 boards and change it with the one on the T21 board or are they not compatable? Or is there any other way to fix the board. I understand this topic may be a little close to the edge as some view it as illegal tampering.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you 'transplant' an EEPROM from a T23 to a T21, it would not work, because the system-info between those two is not compatible.

Apart from that (and if you replace it with e.g. a new EEPROM), you need to know about surface mount soldering techniques for a piece with tiny legs, very close to one another and lots of them!

I don't know if this will work, but I'd try using the Hardware Maint disk (a floppy) to read, then rewrite the model and serial number data. This is what needs to be done when a 'mother' board is replaced. The software creates new check sums and writes them also. The version of the hardware Maint software I found is 1.75.
Good luck

That won't work since the system is stuck at the CRC1 boot error. It never gets past the "Stop POST (Power On Self Test) task".

@ one_jerry:
also, rewriting the same info will NOT create a new checksum!
