I just got new 1GB RAM (COSAIR DDR2700 200 pin) today, after I installed it, my computer show only 1GB. Shouldn't it be 1.5GB.
Anybody have ideas what happen, and what should I do next to get all of RAM I installed.
Thanks!
X40 Ram problem....

Welcome to thinkpads.com!
First a couple of questions:
- what's the TYPE number of your X40? Found on the bottom of the system, it should be something like 2386-KLU. You might put this information in your profile so that it appears in your posts (i.e., in the signature line). That way people will know, or can find out, what your system configuration is.
- what's the part number(s) on the the Corsair module?
- how are you determining what the installed memory is? In other words, what program/utility are your reading that figure from?
The X40 comes with integrated graphics. That means that some of the system memory is reserved by the graphics display. However, it should only go to a maximum of 64MB. Depending upon how much memory is soldered to your X40's motherboard (256MB or 512MB), your available memory can vary by that amount.
As far as what you can do to diagnose any problems, I'd first try downloading a copy of memtest86+, create the boot floppy, USB stick or CD and run the tests. You can get that program from here:

Thanks for your advices!
I found out what the problem is already.
The RAM I got from my friend today is not 1GB (my bad, I should have tried to talk to him before I was crying out in here, sorry), instead he gave me only 512, that's why I can see totally 1 GB (with my 512MB on board).
The way I look for my system spec.... I just do it by right click and select 'property' at 'my computer' icon. Is that the right information I should look for?
I just got this machine from my professor for my dissertation works. I found it is quite slow so that is why I asked my friend to find me more RAM.
Anyway, thanks again
