Will a Western Digital 320gb 7200rpm work properly with APS?

#1 Post by PhilMichael » Fri Dec 19, 2008 2:14 pm

A t60p I'm looking at on ebay has a Western Digital 320gb 7200rpm hard drive installed. I don't know the model number of the hard drive. Does anyone know if it will work properly with the active protection system?

Ohil, I don't know but I installed a Seagate Momentus 320 with the same questions. The drive may be managing the shock detection all by itself--but it certainly IS doing shock protection, i.e. if you swing the computer while video is playing, it pauses.

I suspect that any drive with on-board shock protection will take care of itself, even if the ASP system isn't running in the TPad.

As you can see in my sig, I also have a WD 320GB drive (WD3200BEKT). According to this post, the drives support for APS can be tested by software.

I just finished fiddling with this and I can confirm, the Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB 7200RPM drive supports the IDLE IMMEDIATE command with UNLOAD FEATURE. Both WORDS 84 and 87 have the value of 6163H (bit 13 set), same as the Hitachi drive tested in the linked post.

The drive of course stops when the ThinkPad is moved.
