Can't View Workgroup Computers

#1 Post by RogerPodacter » Sun Jan 16, 2005 3:06 am

For whatever reason i can't see the other computers on the workgroup between my thinkpad and desktop. I joined the same workgroup name and turned off all firewalls on both pcs, but still nothing. any ideas?

the strange part is that my desktop wont recognize anything either. both are able to connect to the internet through the linksys router. and my roommates desktop and laptop have no problems. maybe i'll try using a different workgroup name specifically for my 2 pcs...

Do you have "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" enabled in properties?

Have you enabled the correct sharing on both systems? It isn't necessary (nor wise) to disable your Firewalls in order to network your systems.

How are you connecting the two systems? WiFi to a router? Cable to a router? Direct cable connection? If you're attempting to connect the two systems directly, you need to setup an "ad-hoc" network and use a special crossover cable rather than a CAT5 cable.

I have an R50p with the same problem. I've re-installed the OS and after a short time, the problem reappears. I have other Thinkpads that work properly, but the R50p refuses to cooperate.

Weird thing is that if I type in the name of the computer I want to access in the address bar, such as \\server\ (to access our server), it works fine and displays the shareable resources on the server. But if I click the View Workgroup Computers, it just hangs.

Everything works fine if i join a different workgroup name. maybe it has something to do with the other workgroup that my roommate already has setup.

We're connected through a Linksys 802.11g router. My desktop is hard wired and my T42 is wireless (obviously).

I have a similar problem, but I discovered it had something to do with accessing a Windows 2k computer from a Windows XP computer (and vice versa). Anyone, have this probelm and resolved it?

I turned off firewall and hooked them up to a router (cat5).

I have the same problems. It is really strange. Sometimes I see the Workgroup, sometimes not. If not, mostly a reboot helps, sometimes I have to reboot twice. I have no clue what the problem causes, perhaps a XP Bug? Or is it related to IBM Access Connections?

It is not related to IBM Access Connections. I have the same problem and don't use Access Connections with 2 wireless TP,s a wireless Lattitude, a wired desktop. There is a mix of Win98, 2K and XP and I suspect that creates the problem. Sometimes "searching" for the other computer works, sometimes rebooting one or the other.

Disable the Internet Connection Sharing on the the security tab in the IBM Access connection when you editing the profile.

It also occurs when I want to find my Thinkpad with the Dell Desktop. Both are XP btw...
