WDxxxxBEVE PATA on T43 BIOS doesn't see it at all

#1 Post by patrix » Wed Dec 24, 2008 11:38 pm

I have 160g pata WD1600BEVE -00UYT0 disk, trying to install it on a T43 2668

latest bios, latest embedded controller version.

HD led just stays on and bios just doesn't see the drive (after some delays of recogniotion attempts). Unable to boot. (operating system not found. , of course)

I don't see any 2010 error anywhere..

nothing from WD other than the clicking sound noise fix... and the drive fitness tools...

I cannot even run the Thinkpad bootable-iso drive firmware update cd as it stucks there trying to figure out what hdd it is.

i believe this would apply to other similar WD models such as:
WD2500BEVE WD1200BEVE and any of the WD Scorpio Blue EIDE drives...

am i out of luck?

Welcome to the forum!

From what you're describing I'm tempted to say that the drive is not inserted all the way. It takes 1/10 of a mm for it not to be fully recognized.

Many members have installed WD drives with no issues, apart from infamous "2010 error".

Start from scratch...re-install the drive in the caddy, and keep on trying until you get it recognized...

The other option is that the drive is defective, so you may want to test it in another machine.

Good luck.

The drive is brand new and i have already cloned the old disk onto it by usb and a bootCD.

I kept trying while writing this reply and yes finally got it and rather happy to see the 2010 error at last! (because my trouble was worse than that)

So i will sign the petition i saw about this in another post and get on with making the new drive boot.

I have copied also the hidden thinkpad partition at the end of the drive, the one that boots when the Access IBM button, but ive yet to figure out how to make that work still.. I used paragon partition manager to copy the partitions from davids ultimate bootCD - mini pxe

is there any catch i should do? At the moment i get a blank DOS screen when i try to boot it.

The new drive needs to be in the HDD slot while cloning for it to work.

I managed to make it work with some partition table doctor program..

I will clone it properly having the new drive inside and the old one in the usb.

I am upgrading the same disk on another T43, 2669 this time, and i get the same trouble getting the disk recognised..

Still trying!
