Strange dmidecode output on T42p

#1 Post by KillaByte » Sun Jan 16, 2005 5:06 pm

My T42p just returned from repair (the system board was changed) but unfortunately the technician didn't generate a new UUID and entered the serial number incorrectly.

To get more information I ran the tool 'dmidecode' under Linux. The output was quite strange:

Code: Select all

Handle 0x0001
  DMI type 1, 25 bytes.
  System Information
    Manufacturer: IBM
Product Name: HTG . nkPad T42p
    Version: SERIAL#
    Serial Number: t...
    UUID: Not Settable
    Wake-up Type: Power Switch
Another thing I noticed is that Handle 0x0002 to 0x0005 are missing. Instead there are the handles 0x4249, 0x004D, 0x4249 and 0x004D which contain no sane information. I think they maybe got corrupted.

Can someone owning a T42(p) post his dmidecode (and maybe vpddecode) results (handles 0x0001 to 0x0005) here for comparison?

Since the machine has to go to service again because of another issue, this is not that much of a problem since the guy can fix it then but I'm curious about this.

BTW - can this information be altered without the Thinkpad Hardware Maintenance Diskette?

UPDATE:
After resetting the model nr. with the bios update diskette at least the garbled information is gone. Now only the machine type and serial number are wrong.
It's a trick. Get an axe.

I got hold of a v1.69 Hardware Maintenance Diskette. This did the job of fixing the UUID. However, the serial number thing is kinda strange. The number only gets displayed correctly in the BIOS and with dmidecode when I prefix it with two digits (I used 00). If I don't do this the first two digits are missing. Any ideas on this?

Installation Guide
------------------
1. Boot the system with the Maintenance Diskette in the floppy
drive.
2. Follow the instructions on the screen.

NOTE: When updating the system unit serial number, the information must
be entered in the following syntax:
1S26474AU78F12345
where,
1S preceeds Type number, Model, and then Serial number

Great - thanks!

Where did you get that from?

UPDATE:
Does someone know why on a R51 there's a serial number entered for the processor card (serial 08 )? I thought processor cards aren't used anymore (on my T42p there's no such entry)
