Symantec Endpt. Protection 11.04 works w/ ThinkVantage Apps

#1 Post by WilsonF » Sun Dec 28, 2008 11:13 am

Symantec released maintenance release 4 of SEP and claims that it no longer has the conflicts with ThinkVantage applets. Specifically, the Release Notes state:

C++ runtime errors with Think Vantage Client Security Solution for Vista.
Fix ID: 1267801
Symptom: Smc.exe crashes on boot up or service restart on Vista Enterprise laptops.
Solution: Added the appropriate flag to avoid crashes and security issues

This has been a sore point with users/company administrators trying to deploy ThinkVantage apps and and the latest version of Symantec software.

I have installed SEP MR4 on my T61p with the factory pre-load and all Lenovo updates including Client Security Software. Symantec is correct - no more strange error messages.

So all with access to FileConnect at Symantec can download MR4. Hopefully, it'll work as well for you as it did for me - finally.

Having just spent several hours fixing Norton Internet Security on a friend's computer, I'm surprised anything Symantec makes works period.
X61 Tablet - 1.6GHz C2D, SXGA+, 1GB RAM, 100GB HD, Vista Business.

i have other laptops but i'll be honest i never use 'em

Symantec makes lots of things that work. Symantec Endpoint Protection is one of them, and as a result of this thread today, I downloaded and installed MR4. Previously I was on MR2. The new version works fine.

I have installed newer version of Norton Internet Security (2007, 2008 and 2009). The new versions work fine - the only real issue I had was setting the firewall range for sharing amongs multiple PC's in a network. They changed the setup starting with 2007, but it is in the documentation.

I have used other Symantec products as well. They all worked, and the newer versions of NIS reduce the load on the computer once set up properly (Check through all the options).

Perhaps, but they have a fairly bad reputation for resource and memory use on a number of their commonly-found products.

I'm fortunate enough to have a legal corporate license for the Corporate AV for any of my personal machines. The Corporate AV is alleged to be far more efficient and less resource-intensive than the stuff that ordinary consumers can purchase.

Gotta say that its behavior when starting any of my machines is discouragingly disk-intensive. Task monitor shows "other I/O" counts in the many hundreds of thousands any time I boot a machine. A registry hack to prevent such a "startup scan", easily found with Google, doesn't seem to affect this issue.

I'm seriously toying with the idea of defenestrating it on all my machines and trying one of the free competitors that have a stellar reputation.

I agree with you about Endpoint Protection, which seems reasonable on the dozen or so office machines that I administer. I don't have the right to use that product at home - only the older Symantec Protection Agent that seems to have minimal benefit to me over the stock Windows Firewall.
