Thinkpad T22 2648-8GU Drivers.

#1 Post by Gamernotnerd » Sun Dec 28, 2008 1:42 pm

I have the network card working but no dialup.
I have a yellow ? on the: PCI Simple Communications Controller, Unknown device, and Video Controller (VGA Compatable). And as I mentioned in the title the computer is a Thinkpad T22 2648-8GU running Windows XP, bought off of eBay. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like whoever installed Windows XP on the system either did not do it properly and/or used a non-IBM install disk set. The 2648-8GU originally came with Windows 2000. Or there could be a hardware issue.

If there is a problem with the hardware, then you can use PC Doctor for DOS to diagnose some issues. For the T22, you can either create a 3 floppy disk set or burn an .ISO image to a bootable CD-R:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4YZM3F (diskette set)

http://www.kawakami-ca.com/ibm_t2x/ibm_t22_pcdiag.iso (.ISO image)

Assuming that all of the hardware that is installed in the system is actually working properly, you can get all of the necessary drivers/software for your T22 from here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-57669

Note that most, if not all, of the download packages must first be saved on your system (the *****.exe file), that file executed (i.e., run, launched, started), which then writes all of the files into certain folders on your hard drive (usually in C:\DRIVERS), and then you must locate and execute the specific file (normally a SETUP.EXE file). There is generally a .TXT file which explains the entire installation process (the README file) on the same download page as the install program.

There are 4 potential combo cards that went into the T2x systems. For a T22, likelihood are the last two:

1. Intel Pro/100
2. Xircom
3. 3Com
4. intel Pro/100 SP

For item 4, it has the 3801 modem. This is by far the most popular in the T22. Open the bottom cover and take a look at which one it is.

Here is a listing for all these modem drivers:

For the video controller, it should be the S3 Savage family driver.

Removed cover and it looks to be FRU 22P6444.
EDIT: So it's the 3Com, I have the 3ciom drivers installed, but no dialup.
EDITEDIT: Ok, downloaded new drivers, it said it needs a disc. One that I don't have, I don't have a copy of XP or even 2k.

Open the Device Manager and uninstall the device. Open the Windows Add or Remove Programs utility, look for and remove any installed modem software. Reboot the computer and skip the Found New Device prompts. Find the 3Com modem Setup.exe file and run it.

Each driver has a txt file. Follow the instructions in this file closely.

Ok, I read the readme, extracted the files, attempted to use setup.exe but it wants disc 6 for Windows XP. I don't have Windows XP discs.

Alternative is to try an intel Pro/100 SP card. As I recall, I had quite a bit of installation issues with 3Com as well. Subsequently I've used the intel Pro/100 SP cards almost exclusively.

That would work, if I had one.
