Anywho... I'm wondering if an R30 for $60 is crazy good, crazy mediocre, or crazy phmeh.

Deal or no deal?
I think it would be a good idea to have a designated place where people can ask if a specific thinkpad for a specific price is a good deal. There is probably already a topic for this, but I haven't found it. O_o

Well, it doesn't hold a charge... But I wasn't too concerned about the battery. If I spend $60 on it though, that's $60 less in my x61 fund and I'd have trouble explaining to the people who gave toward it for Christmas why I spent some of it on an older thinkpad.

In your case, for somebody who doesn't have a computer and can cough up the $60 easily, the R30 is probably an excellent deal. For somebody who is actually saving for an X61, it is not a good deal (unless you can sell it right away for a profit).

I'm sure you're talking about this Craigslist ad. It's an excellent deal. The 512MB PC133 module alone is worth $35. If I were you, I would buy it ASAP and sell it right away to make some money. Sell the 512MB RAM on this forum for $30, and then the rest of the laptop on Craigslist for $90.
UPDATE: BTW, the R30 should have either 900MHz Celeron or 1GHz PIII. This particular unit probably has 1GHz and the "700MHz" frequency provided by the seller is probably due to Speedstep. But it's also possible that the CPU has been downgraded, so if you have a chance to play with the laptop before buying it, get into the BIOS (by hitting "F1" during startup) to see whether the CPU is 700MHz or 1GHz.

Yup, that's the one! Hmm... I didn't think about selling it to make money. All that trouble just to make $30 though? I'd rather keep it and use it as my laptop until I get that x61.

CPU can't be downgraded as on these units the CPU is soldered, not a socket type.

Re: Deal or no deal?
Just out of curiosity, how much is a 600X generally worth?
I'll just use this as my personal price-asking thread if nobody else will.

Re: Deal or no deal?
No more than $100 if it is complete, as in working with all original parts included with no defects.

Even if it's a really good deal, I won't be picking it up.
Just wanted to know how good of a deal I was passing up.
Thank ye.

Re: Deal or no deal?
The description and the machine type are at odds. I would not purchase it without talking to the seller. 600X's never came with Pentium II's, Pentium III's only. Plus he mentions 600e in the Ad, most likely indicating what it actually is. Pentium II Thinkpads are very dated, and almost worthless unless you run Windows 95/98 or a light Linux.

Re: Deal or no deal?
youl be so excited when you get it too!
i will probably never move to the 6 series, it's just sad that they took the color out of the mouse buttons and got rid of the thinkpad logo, those asthetics are a big deal to me.

Re: Deal or no deal?
Yea, I can't wait! Like a little kid at Christmas.
I don't know why they removed those things, but the x61 is still thinkpad enough for me to want it.
I wasn't quite as fond of the x200's looks, but I could never afford that anyway.

Re: Deal or no deal?
Most definitely.
Every day something new fails on it... it's been reduced to a word processor that has to have a PS/2 mouse plugged in and be near a wall outlet. Although, the battery's been like that since day one.
There was a modification I was going to do to put a PIII in it, but that just ended up ruining my trackpoint somehow. >_> The CPU worked, but when I screwed it in, I used too long of a screw and must have drilled half a hole through it.
Needless to say, I'll leave the hacking to my older laptops and won't even touch the rubber screw covers on me x61.

Re: Deal or no deal?
that sucks
I wish the touchpoints would be user replacable. I have a 600x that had a bad trackpoint, I turned into a digital photo frame.
it works well for that purpose
