Smallest, quitest, best resolution
Smallest, quitest, best resolution
Hi,
I am a bit lost in the thinkpad world. Especially since thinkpads are lenovo and not ibm any more.
I have resorted to this forum in the past with very good results and now I would like to ask you again for a bit of help.
My institute will buy me a thinkpad. I have been running a 10.2" fujitsu siemens 1.6 kg laptop with 1280x768 pix of resolution for many years and also a T41p with a high resolution lid. I am used to high resolution and I like it a lot.
On the other hand, I love thinkpads and now that my FJS is dead, I want to have a replacement for it in terms of weigth, battery life and screen resolution.
I have been told that the x61 tablet has a very good screen resolution, but I am not decided to take it, because I will not be using the tablet for anything at all (specially if you take into account that my OS is OpenBSD and the tablet will not be working probably)
Is there an x60/61 with a higher resolution than 1024x768?
I borrowed an x31 for some days to see whether I could get used ot it and, really, it was difficult.
What's the difference (weigth, battery life, fan noise) between an x200-x300 and and x61(tablet)?
As you see, I have many questions.
To sum up, I am looking for a thinkpad with the following requisits in order of importance:
1- with a higher resolution than 1024x768
2- small in size and light
3- a long battery life
4- if possible, with apm support and not only acpi
5- if possible, with a pad and not only the joystick thing
Suggestions?
Thanks much in advance
Pau

I would consider the Lenovo ThinkPad X300. It is available with a 13.3 WXGA+ TFT (1440x900 LED backlight) display.

thanks
looks very, very nice.
It is incredible that it only weights 1.33 kg
The screen resolution looks very nice to me.
I am wondering about fan and heat... I will probably ask in the X series forum
By the way, I just found this:

i am gonna wait a little bit and do a short review of x300. but is is the model with the highest build quailty. i mean everything in the laoptop is finished to perfection. there is no moving parts and no plastic coming off anywhere. the battery sits in firm and perfect. the buttons don't feel as clickly and cheap.
I'm looking forward to that review.
Do you have one, mattbiernat?
If you look a bit in the forum you'll see that in the forum that I had an x61s for some time; unfortunately I had ti give it back because I changed my institute for some one year but now I am back and I can "ask" for another one.
I was not satisfied with the x61; mainly because of the display, as I said before. Having 1024x768 on 12" is a crime in 2009. It was probaly fine for x31 in its time but not now, I find. But also the lack of pad was also a pain (I cannot get used to the joystick) and it was dissipating a lot of heat.
When I gave it back, I bought a T41p and it was much cooler and the high resolution was veeeery nice. The problem is that it is a big heavy.
In any case, if they really got 1.33kg on this one, I will ask for it and sell my old T41p

i don't know if my unit is exactly 1.33kg. but coming from a 14" T60 I can tell you that it is just about half its weight.
regarding the screen i would suggest doing a little bit of research before you decided to get X300. yes the screen is 1440x900 and for someone coming from 4:3 14" T60 1400X1050 the difference is negligable. although i do miss my vertical realestate but that's just a problem with widescreen.
now the other aspect of the x300 is its screen quality. for someone like me who never owned a fleview thinkpad the screen is good. not excellent but good and certainly worth the 1150 that i paid for it. i don't wanna say too many good things about my x300 because i just got it yesterday and we tend to go through honeymoon stage with our laptops. oh and x301 suppose to have a better screen than x300.
