memory question

#1 Post by period3 » Wed Dec 31, 2008 10:51 am

I have a T60 with a T2500 processor (core 1, 32 bit), running Ubuntu GNU/Linux, and I'm constantly running out of memory.

If I upgrade to 4GB, I understand only about 3GB of memory will be available due to an annoying and unadvertised (at the time of purchase) chipset limitation. Is all 3GB of this memory available to a single process? I thought I remember reading somewhere that only a maximum of 2GB would be available per-process, but maybe that was a limitation of certain windows versions rather than a chipset limitation...

Thanks.

Yes, the limitation of 2GB comes from certain version of windows. Here is the clue.

How to Set the /3GB Startup Switch in Windows

As for linux, you may consider increasing the size of swap partition.
Core 2 Duo T7600, 3GB DDR2-667 RAM, Main 7K320 320GB 7200RPM + Ultrabay 320GB 5400RPM, ATI FireGL V5250, 15" IPS UXGA, DVDRW, Bluetooth, Atheros ABGN, NMB Keyboard, Fingerprint, Win7 Pro X86 + Vista 64-bit SP2, Advanced Dock.

Now that I think about it, increasing my RAM won't help. If I'm running out of memory now, I will still run out with more RAM. (Since the addressable amount of RAM+Swap will remain a constant 4GB - or maybe 3GB - with my 32bit CPU)

Time to go 64 bit I guess... Thanks for the link.

What are you doing on your ThinkPad that consumes all your memory? Maybe the amount isn't the problem?

Also note that 64bit CPU won't help you as T60 is limited to 3GB no matter what CPU you put in.
