So will the T40 boot off a HD in the media slice?

X2/X3/X4x series specific matters only

So will the X40 boot off a HD in the media slice?

#1 Post by dwilsonfl » Wed Dec 31, 2008 5:08 pm

I have a T40/41 FrankenPad and a new X40. I like a lot about the X40 but that HD needs help. Until HarryC leads us all into Zif bliss with a faster and larger but still affordable solution, could I use the 7200 PATA which I already have in an Ultra Bay adapter in the X40 docking station as a boot and primary device and only revert to the 40gig 1.8" when I need to shed the dock's weight?

*edited to change the title from T40 to X40

Yes you can. If you have an OS on the I.8" drive (HDD-0) you have to specify (F12 or BIOS) that the laptop boots from HDD-1 (in the dock). If the primary drive has no OS, the laptop should find the bootable drive eventually.

"boot" seems relative at this point for that drive in either machine. When I put it in the media slice it did boot and begin finding drivers, but couldn't find the modem or wireless card -oh and the video

so I put it back into the T40 and now it hangs during the welcome screen and won't boot it either.

LOL

XP disks do not have the correct drivers for video, sound (in some cases), network or chipset. You have to get them from IBM's 'driver matrix' web page. Tough to do if you don't have the network drivers, but not impossible.
