I Need Help with an Old 365X ThinkPad

#1 Post by bowtye » Mon Jan 17, 2005 3:01 pm

I recently purchased an old 365X ThinkPad, Model "IBM 26252E9", Serial # "78DGNA4". I bought this laptop off of eBay with a booting problem, no factory CD software. I installed Windows 98 on the laptop and it is working fine. My problem is that the internal CD player has no drivers and is not recognized by the computer, also, it came with a 3Com U.S. Robotics 56 K Winmodem PC Card that has no drivers and will not work. The Model # on the PC Card is "3013". I'm pretty sure that the CD Player is the factory unit that came with the laptop, but not positive. Also, does IBM consider this an "X" Model ?

I have tried every driver I could find on IBM's site with no luck, a few of them even locked up the laptop! Also, I have a hard time finding anything on IBM's site about this laptop, do they not support it anymore? I also have tried everything on U.S. Robotic's site to no avail. The 365X will not acknowledge the CD drive or the Modem, it does have a factory floppy drive that works fine, that is the only thing that has saved me so far.

Any help you could give me on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Hello bowtye,

A few weeks back I was attempting to locate drivers for my 365xd only to find that IBM has been busy dumping files and braking web links on older ThinkPad systems. I would suggest that you do a search of the IBM site for your system, and see if you are able to find some relevant files, I was able to locate some files as of earlier this evening however as I have said they seem to be actively purging files.
To my knowledge the 365x did not have an internal CD-ROM drive, it did however have a 3.5" floppy drive located at the front just under the left side of the keyboard and had an option for an external CD-ROM drive; the 365xd has (or had) a CD-ROM drive in that location and used an external 3.5" floppy. If you have a 365xd, windows 98 has the appropriate driver, if the OS can't find your CD-ROM driver I think you might have a hardware issue.
As for the 3Com card - you best bet is to search their website for a driver.
Sorry I could not be more help; I was very frustrated that IBM has stopped supporting older models.

I'd like to point out that I suggested in early December that we needed to start downloading everything we could get our hands on. See http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... ght=#36385

I wish I was here back then, and saw your post about downloading *everything* because I would have. Did you or anybody download anything? If so let me know - I just got a 760XD that needs drivers, and it was one of the models that was dumped from support.

You say the 760XD was dumped from support? That's odd because just recently, I was able to find all the drivers and support I needed for my 760E and that model is a year older. You just have to search around IBM's site a little bit. It's not that the stuff is no longer there, it's just harder to find.

I see you are correct - and that link made the drivers pretty easy to find. Silly me looking for drivers on the driver download page.

Thanks for the help. I think I now have all of the drivers I need for this TP.

As for 365x vs 365xd, Thane_Bitter is correct (I have a 365x). Regarding support on the IBM site, I have found that on some days I could get the stuff I wanted, but not on other days. I don't know what's going on. I do believe that people with 365x/xd's and WIN98 are in luck, since WIN98 has most all the drivers you would need.

Just like with the 760 series, it's not that the stuff is no longer there, it's just harder to find.
