Sleeve that fits X40 well?

#1 Post by bamberg29 » Mon Jan 17, 2005 3:29 pm

I'm looking for a sleeve that fits the X40 well, but so far I haven't had much luck with finding something that fits just right. At first I really liked the Booq Vyper Sleeve XS, but after reading what a few people have said, it looks like it's a bit too big. So does anyone know of a sleeve that holds the X40 (with 8 cell battery) just right?

*EDIT* The Targus ThinkPad Office Executive (IBM563D) seems to be the right size for the X40, but according to a review on Amazon, the X40 with an 8 cell battery is a bit too big for this bag. ("Don't order this case if you plan on using the 8-cell battery. It will only hold the X40 with 4-cell battery. 8-cell really strains the zippers - bummer!") Any other suggestions for a sleeve that fits the X40 with an 8-cell battery? *EDIT*

I have Pataco CP-1

http://www.pataco.at/htm/consumer/prote ... mp_cp1.htm

I have x40 with 8-cell battery and it looks like the CP-1 was designed right on this configuration :-) It is "tip-top" on my laptop exactly as I wanted.

Material is a rubber and I wear it in my bag without problems.

Thanks a lot for the tip. I'll have to check out this sleeve. Does anyone else know of any other sleeves that fit just right?

I have the X40 with 8 cell battery and I have that Targus Executive Sleeve. It's not a perfect fit, but you CAN squeeze it in there. The zipper is a little tight going around the corners but once you have it over, there's actually even a tiny bit of wiggle room. Not the most convenient if you have to quickly take the machine in and out of the sleeve fairly frequently. But it does work for general transporting of the X40.

The front pouches are handy to carry a/c and a few small accessories.

Crumpler sleeves

#5 Post by hkhalil » Tue Jan 18, 2005 4:29 pm

I'm not sure if this is what you mean by sleeve, but Crumpler do something called "The Gimp" - don't ask me why it's called that !

I have the 12" version for my X31 - fits real snug !

I just received the Shinza Zero Shock 12inch sleeve for my X40 with 8 cell battery, and it is awesome. The Vyper sleeve from Booq was far too big. This is a little bit bigger than the X40 with 8 cell, but it comfortably fits and it is extremely durable. I'm extremely happy with it.

don't buy crumpler. It is terrible, I have a bag and the material is quite terrible - destroying my clothes. Too rude surface.

When you say that it fits "comfortably," what exactly do you mean? Is there much room for the laptop to move around in the sleeve?

I agree. It is perfect. I also stuff an audigy ZS PCMCIA sound card in the card compartment of the sleeve to have an awesome sound system.
This bag is awesome! I have no complaints with it and it looks stunning in gray!

I believe the Shinza ZeroShock bag 12" is designe more for the Apple 12". It is slightly large for a X31, so I believe it will be even bigger for the X40.

I got a waterfield bag, from sfbags.com. They come in various sizes and in my case for the X31 I got size 3. Fits like a glow, like it was made for it. I believe size 2 is a little bit smaller and is almost too small for the X31 (a little thight for my taste). Might be an excellent fit for your X40. If you happen to live in San Francisco area, you can stop by and try it out. That is what I did and I am really happy.

X40 on sfbags site says size 4, and for extended battery size 11. Size 3 no longer available... in fact when I got mine, it was extra ones laying around and he gave me free D-rings with it.

I'm also in the market to get a sleeve for my 8-cell X40...
Anyone know the exact measurements (I don't have a measuring tape)

Too bad the Waterfield sz 3 is discontinued...
Anybody using the sz 4? The recommended sz 11 seems too thick (ext = battery slice perhaps?)

For those that have the Shinza Zeroshock, how do you find the fit of the thickness? Shinza's site has a rating of 1.5" but we all know the X40 is much slimmer...

I found one at www.electronica24.de/. The direct link is http://www.electronica24.de/php/home.ph ... ctID=36397

They want €11.95 for the Pataco CP-1 sleeve.

X40 sleeve

#17 Post by patarky » Tue Feb 01, 2005 12:17 am

I have an X40 with the 8 cell too, and use a Tom Bihn Brain Cell. It almost doesn't fit, but it does work well. The closure is velcro flap across the top, and it is definitely secure. I like the "Brain Cell" because it seems to be almost bullet proof. Also very high quality materials and construction. It fits in my large briefcase, but when I need something just to protect the X40 from getting scratched, I found a Vaio neoprene sleeve that is a perfect fit. I think I found it at CompUSA. It's great if I just need something to keep it covered, not protected.

Being in the US, the pataco isn't much of an option for me; also, seeing the picture, I was rather looking for something that opens down the sides all the way. I settled on a Shoreline neoprene case; I have one for a Dell D600 I have and I really like it. The medium and large size cases have carry handles, but the small case that fits the X40 doesn't. Kinda wish it had handles, but I guess it would look too small with them. I use mine with both the extended battery and the 8 cell; its a slight stretch along the length, but theres like about an inch to spare on the width. The nicest thing about the Shoreline cases though is that they have straps on the corners that hug onto the laptop, even when you open the case up. Here's a pic.

As another site put it, its "The long-awaited replacement for the popular Kensington Wetsuit, the Shoreline Medium Laptop Case is made of the neoprene used in diving wetsuits to provide extra protection for your laptop. "

i'm using the shinza zeroshock on my x21 and it fits very nicely. the x40 is smaller so it might be a different story but the quality of the shinza is really nice. if i ever upgrade to a x40 i'm keeping the zeroshock case.

The best sleeve that i've found is the Spire XS boot. It can function as an independent bag. It's extremely well padded, and the X40 with 8-cell fits PERFECTLY (not too tight).

Their backpacks are also awesome!

Late to this topic. Usually when case topics come up I plug the stuff at Tom Bihn. Their Brain Cell is technically not a sleeve, but it has a cradle design and hard sides so it offers real protection.

The Booq Vyper XS sleeve works great. It's a bit on the bulky side (I had to stuff two sheets of foam in there for extra padding) but it ended up working great. Looks good too.
