Problem installing Xp SP2

#1 Post by winslow » Wed Jan 07, 2009 9:43 pm

recently changed the hard drive on My T30 now reinstalling the system with the recovery Disks. After getting the system reloaded I try to update using windows update. Naturally the first update it installs is SP2, however I noticed another update I wasn't familiar with. After downloading and installing SP2 (and the other unknown update) the sytem will not boot, I get a checksom 221 error message (driver issue). I can start and reboor numerous times before running the update (tried about three times), but after installing the update I immediately get the checksum error. Seems to me it must be a software/ driver problem or why wouldn't I get it before updating? Anyone else experiencing this problem after a recent install of SP2? Thanks in advance.

Indicates driver problems, system file problems, disk corruption problems (such as a damaged pagefile), or faulty memory hardware.
I'd start with running memtest86 on it for a few hours.

If it's a memory problem then why does the system run error free until I install SP2, why would it malfunction only when running SP2.

In the processof downloading SP2 again, tis time only SP2 is listed in the update. Additionally it states that SP2 has to run seperate of any other updates, perhaps that was a contibuting factor, I'll know momentarily when SP2 has installed. Additionally I wiped the disk before reinstalling the system this time. It seems to be a corrupt driver filr issue. It listed a driver number dll (forgot what it was).

Finally got the system installed with all the updates, not sure what the problem was but have a couple off possible reasons.

1. The first time I loaded the system I downloaded both SP2 and SP3 on a flashdrive from another computer then installed SP2 from the flash drive. I forgot to remove the flash drive when the system rebooted. Not sure if the files got corrupted from the flash drive being installed in the sysyem.

2. The second time I used the microsoft update site to download SP2 but notices there was a second update that was downloaded and installed at the same time. The directions for SP2 say that SP2 must be installed by itself. I must have used the custom option and picked another update by mistake.

Just to mmake a short story long it seems it all boils down to operator error.
