Graphics questions: (T60p migration from 10.5.4 -> 10.5.6)

I have been reading on this forum and others (insanely mac, etc.) and have a few questions, mainly about the ATI graphics kexts.

Is there anyplace that has a reference list as far as what file does what? In part b/c it would make diagnosing problems/issues easier, and in part because I'm just interested.

More to the point:

I have a retail install of 10.5.4 that is working well (qe/ci enabled, all that stuff.) I have a duplicate install on usb that I use to test out things before I put them on my main HD. I upgraded that usb based drive to 10.5.6, and got most things to work again (mouse, network, etc.) What I have not yet achieved is QE/CI on the new system.

I tried to modify the kexts manually, and got a blue screen before login. Then I grabbed the kexts that finetuned made earlier in http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 312e77dba8 that thread, and got QE/CI with some level of tearing/artifacts. (close to success.)

The main reason I would like QE/CI to work is so that VMware fusion will startup - it falls over if the graphics aren't close to perfect.

So, my questions:

1) Anybody know how the kexts changed, if they did? I modded ATIRadeonX1000.kext and the usual stuff as well (ATIInject.kext) to add my edid (the one that worked in 10.5.4).

2) in ATIInject.kext - the line LVDS, EDID - that is describing the display device, rather than the graphics card, I assume? (Looking for confirmation.) If this is true, then wouldn't the same edid apply no matter the release of 10.5.x?

3) Is there a way to detect EDID w/o windows? (I'm coming from linux-land.
