A31p does not recognize 320Gb HDD

#1 Post by saint » Sat Jan 10, 2009 6:21 am

Hi Guys,

Need help on this. I tried to put a 5400rpm 320Gb HDD in the internal drive bay of an A31p but it was not detected.

Any fix for this?

Thanks & Cheers,
:)

There is absolutely no reason why an A31p should not recognize the drive unless;

1.) It is not a 2.5" IDE Laptop hard drive
2.) The drive is bad
3.) The drive is not seated correctly

Is it seen in BIOS?

Since the biggest PATA drives I know of are 250GB, I think you're onto something.

Maybe this is the reason. Thanks!

I forgot to mention that it cannot boot into XP at all when this is present. Under normal circumstances, the A31 bios does not show HDD info.

As ext HDD, it is ok but not int. :( I already installed latest Bios for A31p.

That is not the case. It would show up in boot order in BIOS (Startup section) if it's a 2.5" IDE drive. What is the manufacturer and model on the new drive?

This is WD Scorpio WD2500BEVE 250Gb. My bad, sorry. Not 320Gb. It does not show up in the BIOS. Even with my bootable HDD, it does not show up too.

That drive should work with no issues. Are you certain that it is seating correctly in the drive bay? Also, is this a new drive out of the box or did it have something on it? What was on it? Was there a DDO program on it? (disk drive overlay) Does this drive work in the enclosure while hooked up to another PC?

Yes, it works as an ext drive even to the A31p. I have it formatted. It can be seen.

In the secondary HDD bay, the whole system just cannot boot. Not sure what is going on. Maybe A31p does not support WD Scorpio drive like 250Gb?? :(
Really does not make sense at all.

I have no explanation for why it does not, but it should work. Does another drive work in that bay?

Try setting the jumper on the new drive to master and cable select. Try them both.

Sorry but I am surprised that 2.5inch HDD has jumpers. I notice all the pins go into the connector inside the bay. If I put a jumper, it won't be able to go in. Am I missing something?

All of the pins do not go into the connector in the bay. Look at the top of the drive for a diagram,. Those pins designated as jumpered pins do not go into the connector. We're grasping at straws here to try to get you working. I have never personally had to jumper a laptop drive. The easy answer is to get another drive and use that instead. I had a problem once where a drive was not seen by a 770Z thinkpad. I had to write zero's to the drive. You could also try that.

- if you want to play with jumper-settings on the WD2500BEVE see the Jumper settings for WD 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch EIDE drives.

When you have two drives both with OS loaded, the computer may not boot. The right side Ultrabay doesn't have this problem.

The computer HDD slot only use 40 pins. But that slot is always a Master.

The Ultrabay trays use all 44 pins so no jumper can be present. I believe the A30/A31 right side bay is always slave.

Like Harry said, HDD never need jumpers to work in Thinkpads.

Maybe I'm a bit slow or missed something in the thread, but I'm curious as to why we are having a discussion regarding the number of pins. If the OP is in fact correct and that he is talking about a 320Gb HDD, then it's not an IDE drive anyway and won't have 44 pins. It should have a SATA interface and he's using some sort of aftermarket UB2K HDD adapter for SATA. I've seen some for sale occasionally on eBay but haven't seen an actual one or worked with one.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220

You can set the boot order in the BIOS though.

Thanks, Harry. I will try to slot the bay into the right side and see if it works. Wish me luck!
