Strange shadows on R51 display

#1 Post by barry » Tue Jan 18, 2005 10:18 am

Ok, I have just bought a R51 thinkpad with a 15" SXGA+ FlexView display.
When I have a bright colored window open on a dark desktop background, I get strange bold lines above and under the window which lighten up the background a bit.
I made a few sketches of what it looks like:

When the window is higher, the lines/shadows are getting brighter. The width does not seem to matter at all, apart from the fact that the lines are as broad as the window.

(venster is Dutch for window :) )

Since the intensity of the sketches matches quite well you can imagine how annoying this is.
Furthermore, I have this problem at any resolution, at any display brightness and under both Linux and Windows.
Ofcourse the problem occurs under all similair contrast-rich situations.

This looks like a good reason to call my retailer, what do you guys think?

Strange shadows on R51 display

The effect you describe is something quite often seen on older (STN) type LCD's and is a result of gate leakage on the transistors embedded within the screen.

With a modern screen this effect should be hardly (if at all) visible and if the effect is as obvious as in your diagrams then I would suggest that you either have a faulty TFT panel or some issue with the display harware or panel supply on the laptop.

Either way a warranty call to either your supplier or IBM is the way to go.

I sent it to my supplier/retailer but it they say its not a significant problem at all and there're questioning the sence of sending it back to IBM.
Does anyone has an idea? This can't be normal for flexview display, can it? Maybe there's someone arround here with a flexview who notices the same artifacts under the given circumstances?

Thank you!
