Windows 7 on a Thinkpad T60
I have an IBM thinkpad T60 with 3GB ram.
I attempted to install Windows 7 beta 64 bit and received the fillowing error will it was loading from DVD:
Windows Boot Manager
File \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe
0x00000358
Attempting to load a 64 bit applicaiton however this cpu is not compatible with 64 bit mode.
Go figure, I thought these laptops were all 64 bit capable.
So I installed the 32 bit version instead. right now it seems to be working pretty good, much faster than XP. Real snappy.
I will try to install the IBM utilites from system update to see how that works.

Re: Windows 7 on a Thinkpad T60
Core Duo T60's will not run a 64bit OS.
Re: Windows 7 on a Thinkpad T60
T60's can run a 64-bit OS, if and only if the user upgrades the CPU.
I have found the CoreDuo in my T60 to be plenty fast for all my uses and as such haven't bothered going to 64-bit. That and if I do some of my older games won't work anymore. Sad really, I play those games a lot. Still install off of floppies sometimes too.
That being said, Windows 7 flies on my T60 and I am using it right now!

Re: Windows 7 on a Thinkpad T60
@Temetka, I think what you are saying is that a 64bit OS can be run if you upgrade the CPU from a Code Duo, to a Core 2 Duo. That is true, however all T60's are not capable of it. You need a rev. 3 systemboard. That can be verified through CPU-Z.

Re: Windows 7 on a Thinkpad T60
I have been running Vista 64 on a T60P on which I replaced the CPU with a Core 2 Duo. That has to be done with care for the proper heat sinking.
I now am installing Windows 7 on a separate HD in the Ultrabay but keeping my Vista 64 for real work.

Re: Windows 7 on a Thinkpad T60
Hi guys,
after installing win 4 ultimate 64 bit on my t60 for enabling use of all 4gb ram (which I found out wasn't posible) I now got some video problems. I can't seem to put my computer to sleep and I can't add an extra screen on the vga output (for a tv).
Am I reading above that it isn't even posible to actually run win 7 64 bit on my t60 and maybe it's the reason why my computer actually got slower though I installed new and more ram.
I can't seem to find the right driver for the graphics. it just calls the graphics card for a standard vga and suggests it has the right driver.

Hi Anders, welcome to the forum.
I beleive all your problems are caused by the lack of a video driver. You can probably use the Vista driver, either Intel or ATI depending on which you have, on the driver matrix page here:

Re: Windows 7 on a Thinkpad T60
But I can't seem to find the right driver. None of them install.
I tried the one for intels on vista, but how do I know it's even the right card?
Can I some how detect my video card

What is the 7-character model number of your T60?

Re: Windows 7 on a Thinkpad T60
type 2007-6RG does that seem correct?
Re: Windows 7 on a Thinkpad T60
Yes, that's the number George was asking about. Here is the original description of your machine:
ThinkPad T60 (2007-6RG)
T7200(2GHz), 1GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 14.1in 1400x1050 LCD, 128MB ATI Radeon X1400, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro
So you need the ATI driver. Carefully examine the readme associated with the driver, as it containes the directions you will need to install it.

Re: Windows 7 on a Thinkpad T60
Thank you and sorry. Can you find the correct driver? On amd's site it hasn't got the right driver for xp nor vista or 7.

Re: Windows 7 on a Thinkpad T60
Well, problem solved. I just thought I had to install the drivers, but it's like the computer doesn't detect the new driver. You actually have to install manually by clicking update driver on your video card, and select the path the driver 'installed' in. And badabing now my computer is able to sleep and I can extend the screen to my tv.
Thank you for your help.
Thank you for your help.
