Screen Protector for X61s, ease of installation?

#1 Post by leesiulung » Sun Jan 11, 2009 3:04 pm

I considered the 3M privacy filter for a whopping $40+, but don't travel enough to justify the cost as well as the poor installation option. So I'm thinking of just getting a regular Screen Protector and who better to ask then the tablet PC crowd.

I'm looking for something that protects the laptop screen without the hassle of keeing a mat or something between the keyboard. I want protection from nasty keyboard (oil) marks and trackpad impression on the screen as well as fingerprints. I hate fingerprints marks and it irks me that people point to the screen and feel the urge to touch it!

Anyhow, major concern for me is in order of importance:

1. Clairity and ease of installation (static cling?)
2. No fuzzy screen and easy removal

Most of the time I have to purchase multiple screen protectors to make one fit properly. That is costly, so I'm hoping these static cling ones are pretty sturdy and easy to apply.

Any suggestions? Anything I should be aware of?

I did a search, but most of the threads didn't focus on the installation. I did find this collection of reviews of screen protectors: http://www.gottabemobile.com/2008/08/19 ... t-results/

If I remember correctly, I ordered the screen protector for my x41 tablet from invisibleshield when they were have a sale(Two sets for $25 shipped). The installation takes about 10 minutes but I had to lay the protector with some books on top of it for three days to flatten it before I did the procedure since they came in cupboard cylinder containers.

I have not removed the protector since I applied it. But I don't think it is going to be hard to remove it since there was no glue between the film and the screen. The cutting of the protector was OK and there was minimum "edge" effect(some protectors' edge will start let air in and come off with time). I have had it for about one and a half year.

My major two complaints about the protector from invisibleshield (which could also happen from other brands) are that 1. It's glossy. I found I have to adjust the angle of the LCD screen several times to get a perfect angle so I won't get annoyed by the light's reflection on the screen when I am typing. 2. The surface texture of the protector is not suitable for stylus use. It has much more resistance than the screen w/o protectors. Everytime I used the stylus on the screen I always have to worry that I applied too much force to move the pen and that might cause damage to the screen which defies the purpose of using a screen protector.

Thanks teetee for the feedback! I needed up ordering a 3M Privacy Filter and will do another review given time. It seems easy enough to secure and re-useability is extremely good with this filter. It should not introduce any glossiness, but just make the screen slightly dimmer.

I saw the installation procedure for the invisible shield from zagg and do not feel comfortable doing a wet install. Furthermore, I don't you are suppose to install these on Thinkpads with a soft screen. I think mine is considered a soft screen.
