Quite the deal. I got mine for 1750 or so from IBM a few months ago. Maybe they're getting rid of their stuff for the Lenovo swap...
Maybe I should talk my dad into buying one. He wants a notebook, but I don't know if I should tell him to get an IBM, since they're leaving the business.
I have a hard time telling him to get something else, but I just don't know if him getting a new TP right now is a good idea.
Any opinions on this? I've been leaning towards the HP nc6000 business notebook for him. It seems to have decent reviews.

Why would now be any worse a time than any to buy a TP? There's no reason to believe that Lenovo bought IBM's PC business, simply to divest themselves of it's most profitable and valuable brand unit (namely, Thinkpads). Any purchases now will receive the same warranty and service that they ever have, even if they discontinue certain TP models.

this is as good a time to buy a thinkpad as any time ever was..
the product is better than ever (in SPITE of the hyperbole' you read hereabouts) and the value for the $$ is excellent..
typing on my Q1U i marvel how great this keyboard is, and just how fast this little devil is..
the T43 will be announced soon and i have some T42's on sale, just like ibm..
but i don't add sales tax..
where ever you get a thinkpad, the value is there..
and if i were not in this business i would surely have an on site warranty just for the peace of mind..

Either you buy it now or later, both cases there will be disadvantages and advantages. For instance, you buy it now then you know it was designed under IBM leadership and products are still manufactured with quality control by IBM. Lenovo on the other hand was a hughe PC manufcturer for the cheap low end market, very much like emachines. The support might degrade over time as the company restructures and tries to improve profit. One of the reason IBM sold their pc division is due to low profit.
If you buy it later, then you can research the reviews and see if the products meets the standard. Also most likely the next generation Thinkpad due out in 2005 is designed under IBM.
Personally I don't trust the fact that the same people worked for IBM work for Lenovo is gonna make a hughe difference in product quality. It is more than just the same people to design a successful product. Meaning, enough resoures must be allocated, people now working for Lenovo must be proud to work for Lenovo now, changes in a company are usually reflected badly especially for a new take over this might make unhappy employees and result in worse product, Lenovo has no experience making high end pc product, Lenovo has only dealt with the Asian market,... etc... etc.. should I go on... wait what was this post about again?

The support issue is the only one. I know the TPs themselves are great, and I love mine. But, I have the 3 year accidental damage, and I would imagine my dad would probably get that also. The issue in his mind, especially for him as it will be for business, is that he has to trust the support that IBM will have in the future. I don't really know what to tell him about that, as I'm not sure what will happen either.
Plink,
While IBM sold the manufacturing to Lenovo, they kept the support activities for themselves for the next 5 years.
I wouldn't worry about support changing in the foreseeable future.

James

I have a question about the Video stuff. Going back to my dad wanting a notebook, he's cool with getting a TP now.
I don't know much about video ram, and all that stuff, I just know that on my FVU I got the 64 Vid ram 9600 or whatever.
For him, this will be a business notebook. He'll use Powerpoint sometimes, digital pictures, possibly spreadsheets, and other general business stuff.
Does he need 64 and 9600? I don't know exactly what the video stuff applies to, if it's only watching movies, and gaming that it makes a difference.
He wants a 15 inch screen, possibly with a lower resolution, but he's not final on that, as he wants to look at mine first, and see if it would be okay for him.
Thanks again.

I was extremely reluctant to sell the X31 I had awhile ago and was very sad to see it go. It was absolutely a little gem.htorres wrote:wow...right about now would be a good time to jump on one of those 2378FVU's. Truth be told it is all i really need. Then again....those little bitty little X40's just call to me....hmm....which one should i get...help me out a bit kids.........
I was MORE reluctant to sell the one X40 I've had so far!

James...i assume that is a vote for the X40.....there is something compelling about the form factor....and I actually didnt want to wait until april or whenever the x41's are due....so i pulled the trigger. The machine will mostly be used by my daughter. The problem is if the FVU drops even further in price i might not be able to resist....Lord give me strength...
One thing to consider when buying a T42 now is whether the price will drop further when the T43 starts shipping next month.
The current drop might be getting ready for the T43, or it might just be that it's getting old now. If its for the T43, then I wouldn't expect it to drop again or as much next month.

htorres,
I have a T42 and its already ultra-portable. It weighs under 5 pounds and is 1" thin. I think anything thinner than that ... u have to sacrifice on performance and build quality. Thats what i think anyway.
I say go for the fvu .. its got SXGA+ screen and has kick-a$$ radeon9600 graphics.
I bought the fvu 4 months ago for 1800 $. times have changed.
