T60's palm rest not fixed properly ..Where is wrong?

#1 Post by sco1984 » Thu Jan 15, 2009 8:56 am

Hello,

Keyboard of my T60 was not working well.
I replaced with keyboard with different FRU but it fits it.
I have fixed everything and able to use laptop without any trouble but
The portion next to finger print reader, to be specifi the portion of palm rest close to up/down arrow keys and hdd cover is not fixed properly.
If I put my finger on that [] << this type strip, I can feel its loose not fixed well.
I tried so many times. I also asked my laptop repair friend to check. He was able to fix it at some extent but not 100%
I want to fix it. Any hints how to ?

Above is the picture of the corner I am talking about.

There is a very good video about removing and installing the keyboard for the T60:

There are tabs on the underneath of the touchpad. The male and female slots need to line up, then you it'll close flush.

Most likely, you bent one of them, and it's keeping it from a flush close. Just bend them back into place with a flat head, its a common mistake.

Screws are all the same size, so it has to be a tab issue holding you back.

Thanx to both of you.
I dis assembled palm rest yesterday and saw it carefully.
I found there is small L shaped lock which is broken.
It's extremely micro but it looks like broken.
What is the normal cost of new palm rest in USA?
Palm rest in my laptop has finger print too.
Any idea about approx cost of it?
It isnt giving me any problem but I think I should replace it if its affordable.

Or shall I fix a new scew?

Amey.

The quoted online price (NEW) from Service Parts UK (IBM) is: £57.93inc VAT + P&P - Hopefully the US price is alot cheaper.

The fingerprint palmrests are relatively expensive. You say you replaced the keyboard (only?) and then had a problem with the palmrest? It might always have been that way - we notice things much more after we've worked on them! I any event, it's done now. You might want to consider some double sided tape under the palmrest at that location (small, so you can remove the palmrest should you ever need to).

Hello,

After extract of all replies from all of you, I suspect it's may be a problem of the scew which is fitted close to hdd bay.
All other keyboard screws are of same shape and thread. But the screw near to hdd bay is exact + type screw.
Rest keyboard removing screws are also + sign but 1 minus sign on it is fully streched so that 1 can use minus screw driver. Any1 can show me picture of yout T60 base screw for keyboard located close to the HDD bay screw located on bottom? So that I can come to final conclusion. :)

I remembered I actually lost 1 screw and my friend [ the laptop guy ] fixed it but not 100% . So I guess he fixed a wrong size scew. But still want to verify. Pls send pic of the scew if it can be clearer so that 1st of all i'll try to switch another screw and will check it.

Regards,
Amey.
