T22 to T42 Migration

#1 Post by geep » Tue Jan 18, 2005 10:39 pm

What suggestions would you offer as I prepare to migrate to my new T42 from my T22? (file transfers etc.) Thanks.

I just migrated my T20 to a T42p, so I can share my experience.

It was pretty seamless. Set up the new machine with the same accounts as the old one (if you have more than one account as you should). Download any driver updates and install your apps first, and then transfer your files and settings.

You have a couple choices for file and setting tranfer - the MS Files and Setting Ttransfer Wizard (under accessories/system tools) or the IBM System Migration Assistant. I used the MS Wizard just because I've used it before and am familiar with it - not sure how the IBM tool works but it's probably similar. I have a wired home network and I used it to tranfer the files to my backup server and then read them onto the new machine from there. If you don't have a network I think the MS tool will work with a crossover network cable connecting the two machines (I assume the T21 has a network card). If I remember right I had to run the wizard once under each account because the My Documents folders are marked private. If you make them not private first you might only need to run it once to get all the accounts.

There were a few minor things to clean up afterward, and I'm still finding the odd browser plug-in that I forgot to install, but all in all pretty painless.
