Connecting to shared folders on a Vista machine from XP

#1 Post by dsvochak » Sun Jan 18, 2009 11:00 am

I didn't find an answer when I searched, so:

In W2K/XP (with simple file sharing off) you’re asked for a user name and password when trying to access shared files (assuming all machines have passwords set). The same is true when accessing files on an XP machine from a Vista machine?

What settings have to be changed to allow an XP machine to access the shared files on a Vista machine? (It works if I turn off Password Protected Sharing in the Vista Network and Sharing center. If Password Protected Sharing is on, the XP machine can’t log on and I have to have password protection.)

I must be missing something. Thanks in advance

It works the same way for me. You do need to ensure that File and Print sharing is allowed in the TCP/IP properties, and you do need to ensure that firewalls are allowing the other machine to access. .... JDH

Thanks jdhurst for the suggestion. Somehow File and Print Sharing got turned off. Allowing it did not entirely solve the problem.

As it turns out, I was trying to use what Vista (in Computer Management->Local Users and Groups->Users) describes as a “Full Name” not “Name”. Using “Vista Full Name” for “User Name” in the XP “Connect” to dialog box resulted in a logon failure. Using “Vista Name”, with the password, works fine.
