Anyone here interested in model: 2373GUU?
Did a forum search. Came up with nothing for 2373GUU. Wondering why no one is interested in this second to top T42p 14.1" model?
For your reference the 2373GUU has:
Pentium M 745 1.8
1GB memory
14.1 ” SXGA+
FireGL 128 MB
60U 7200RPM HD
DVD-RW
11a/b/g Wi-Fi
Mod/Blue
9 cell battery
3 year warranty

The 2373GUU and the 2373KTU are identical except the KTU has the faster Pentium M 755 2.0ghz CPU. My guess is that the IBM forgot to drop the price of the GUU when they dropped the price of the KTU (which was in the $4000's originally).

I am not interested in the 2373GUU, but i am VERY interested in the 2373GRU: http://www5.pc.ibm.com/us/products.nsf/ ... p/_2373Gru
This is the same Thinkpad except with 512 ram, and $500 or so dollars cheaper...

Hi-
This might be a really dumb question but where do you guys find these models? I can't seem to find them on ibm's site and to see the specs I need to change the model in this link - http://www5.pc.ibm.com/us/products.nsf/ ... p/_2373ktu
Is it that they are just not up on IBM's site currently? Thanks for your help-

Not "outdated" just older!fox_napier wrote:That's odd. Who's going to buy relatively outdated technology found in the T40p for any more than $2k? Basically catering to companies that MUST have a T40p because of some bureaucracy? And isn't it about time the T40p is retired, i.e. isn't IBM's own offerings at this pricepoint beating the T40p?
They have a policy to keep certain models up for so many product cycles in order to conform to business needs. It's not about business bureaucracy as much as keeping support costs low (same parts, same idiosyncratic behaviour, same exact software images...)
It's the whole, if it's not broke, don't fix it issue.

I think that's what most of us here do. Though the TABOOK is the most definitive source:synapse wrote:...and to see the specs I need to change the model in this link - http://www5.pc.ibm.com/us/products.nsf/ ... p/_2373ktu

Apologies for my choices of words (outdated, bureaucracy). Perhaps I'm the real cynic
But seriously, reducing costs in this manner makes sense.
I guess this also means that IBM doesn't really undercut itself. Companies who will buy the older models even if they are more expensive than a newer, better performing and cheaper model are doing so for support reasons.
So this brings up another related point tied to another poster's remarks. Who is going to spend more than $3k+ on a machine with three years warranty, when you can get two $1.5k machines that are slightly less dependable but also with three years warranty? Yes, the short answer is probably "companies" but if companies are interested in reducing costs, is the initial more expensive outlay/premium for a ThinkPad justified from a company perspective?
And even if say the cost of a GUU machine is worth it for a company, do you think it is worth it for an individual over three years with the kind of depreciation laptops take over that time?

when a LE (Large Enterprise) with thousands of T40's need more they don't want to have to change their preload to accomodate a T41 just because technology and sales have chosen to make that T40 uneconomical to sell..
so ibm created "workhorse" models that they promise to make for a year or longer..
thus you can still get some new T40's..
the R50p falls into this category.. it will be made until december 04..
i doubt that the ibm web list price for the 2373GUU will go to $2600 or even $2900, ever..
the $3,379.00 IBM web List Price on the 2373GRU is 10% off on my web site and 15% off if you pay in full with the order..
thats about as close to $2500 you will see for this model, new..

Still - a G. Whew.fox_napier wrote:As others in this thread and on other threads in this forum have indicated, after debut ThinkPad prices drop, often sharply. 2 things.. even if you have two less dependible laptops, what happens when your laptop goes down in the middle of a presentation... or fails on the road. These things cost a lot of money if you miss a pitch or can't get the work done. Transferring information between two laptops isn't cost effective. 3yrs warranty be [censored], dependiblity is still worth more. Think of it this way. You have 3 cars. 1 that is almost rock-solid and with a 3yr warranty and 2 other cars the same that break-down from time to time, but also with a 3yr warranty and cost the same as the 1 rock-solid car. At what point being stranded on the road do you realize you made the wrong choice and should have went with the dependible car?fox_napier wrote: So this brings up another related point tied to another poster's remarks. As for personal use, I never sell my thinkpads. They either keep getting used by me or they're given to friends/family for their continued usage. They never seem to die and even 4 year old models seem better than many current models (if only in durability) Laptop tech isn't worth buying based on a resell value. It's there to get work done and the more I get done without any downtime, the more I've made my money back. Sometime soon I'm officially getting my consulting business back up (I've taken a hiatus for a few years), and at that point I'll buy a new thinkpad and claim the depreciation value as a business expense-- but even until then, I'm not going to put up with the hassle of a poorly contructed and unreliable piece of technology and I'll consider the money spent as something that paid for the relief of frustration.
The KTU's original price was $3909. Given the current price of the KTU compared to the GUU, why settle for less? Bill will give you 10% discount beyond the list pricecsv96 wrote:The 2373GUU and the 2373KTU are identical except the KTU has the faster Pentium M 755 2.0ghz CPU. Well, I really don't believe 200 Mhz of the KTU will make much of a difference in my real world computing experiences. Also, have any of the 2 Ghz Dothans shipped? I will ask Bill what his prices for both the GUU and the KTU are.
