Forum X41 Project donation (PIC)

#1 Post by dsvochak » Mon Jan 19, 2009 10:43 am

This X41 is no longer available because it has been donated to a member in the military. Thanks for your interest in this machine, and in the thinkpads.com X41 Project.
Let me be the first to offer kudos to whoever decided on the above disposition of this project. (And those who worked on it). Brilliant solution.

Thanks.

I agree. And if it helps to ease his/her mind, X41 did more good than average thinkpad...

It's really amazing that nobody went for this unit, which was really competitively priced.
But it's great to see it change hands to someone who can really use it, and is in such a deserving position. :thumbs-UP:

NOTE: I hope this is not the end of the Forum Projects...

Not necessarily the end of the forum projects, but we're down to around $100 left after buying an AC adapter for the X41 and shipping, so we'll definately be in 'parts donation' mode again for awhile. I am open to any ideas for the next project. If anyone has a broken machine that needs a home, speak up.

As the X41 was gifted to me, I wanted to send up a quick post of thanks to Harry and the forum. I'm an E-4 with an infantry recon platoon in eastern Afghanistan, about three months into a twelve month deployment. My Dell notebook began disintegrating over the last six weeks, finally succumbing to the omnipresent Afghani dust and the constant jostling of being carried around in an assault pack or ruck all the time. I emailed Harry offering to purchase the X41, ignorant that it was a forum project, and he PM'd me back offering to me as a gift from the forum. It was both unexpected and incredibly generous.

I'd like to say that I'll be an active member of the forum immediately, but the truth is that I've spent the last week at a relatively comfortable forward operating base before heading back out to one of several combat outposts that we man during the winter months. While the fob has easy internet access, the outposts are generally limited to email access through DoD systems if anything at all. That said, I will absolutely become active in the forum once I'm able and would very much like to participate in any forum projects that might be ongoing at that time.

So thanks again to the entire forum, having a computer to record a journal entry, watch a film, or put on some music after a day in the field is a godsend out here. I'll be available via the forum for a couple days and after that can be reached via email at mattDOTmarcusATusDOTarmyDOTmil.

Thanks again,

Matt

Matt--

Go with God and keep as safe as you can. I think everyone appreciates what you and everyone else serving is doing.

Thanks.

Matt, thanks for the open letter to the forum. I can't think of a more deserving recipient of this unique machine. Good luck with it, and godspeed on your return home.

That's a kick a** picture. And I'm glad we found a deserving person to benefit from the project. Maybe we should work on sending him a case and some compressed air to keep the sand out.

I knew that Harry had come up with this great idea, but have only recently (OK...TODAY) found time to read it. It started me thinking on whether there might be a way to turn this into an ongoing project of some sort. I figure that Matt isn't the only member of the military stationed out in the boonies that could benefit from those of us who might have an excess machine or two. Shoot, it doesn't have to be the military; I'm certain there are Peace Corp members who are in this boat as well.

I know, that when you think about it; it's a potentially complicated idea and might simply be too big, but I'm just throwing it out there to see what other members think. :?

I think it's a great idea! We should pick random people to give the forum projects to. But I probably won't be of much help, my parts inventory consists of a few 600e and 560 stragglers. :(
