So, I have a brand-new LCD panel to swap into my 14.1" T42.
I've never done this before, but I've read the HMM so I know what the recommended procedure is. The way the procedure is written, they want you to remove the entire lid/LCD assembly from the base of the computer first, then disassemble the entire lid assembly from there.
Do I actually have to do all that, or can I just leave the lid attached to the base, remove the LCD bezel, unhook the LCD cable and inverter from the LCD panel, remove whatever latches or other parts may be in the way, and then just lift the old LCD right out of the lid?
Am I missing something?
Thanks!

You don't need to take the lid off the base.
If you re-use the old LCD cable, you're fine with just disassembling the lid itself.

Just a small hint on the fly, which I recall seeing here on the forum - a word of caution when replacing LCD panels; see the thread How hard is DIY replace a LCD screen on T42p.. especially the comments by Robbyrobot and schmaud in this post, where:

The LCD is sticking to the front panel with some double-sided adhesisves... this is not mentioned in the HMM... just took some extra minutes to check that i did not forgot any screws.
Probably worth being aware of!Robbyrobot wrote: This "minor point" applies to nearly all the Thinkpad displays, is never mentioned in the HMM and often enough leads to breakage of the LCD bezel. Whether the omission in the HMM is just an oversight, or is designed to generate orders for spare parts, is a mystery to me. I consider the omission a major (and unnecessary) problem.

Have you changed out the LCD ?
I changed 6 of these last week it's really not that hard to changed if you haven't gotten it changed over let me know and i can give you any help you need, it is a bit Tedious changing them but it's actually not too bad.
