reply button + quote button [thumbnail warning] [resolved]

#1 Post by Marin85 » Wed Jan 21, 2009 4:30 pm

Well, this is a little bit more complicated observation and I´ll do my best do describe it despite my English :) When you use the reply button in order to reply to someone´s post, but then you additionally want to quote from the previous post of that person and for that purpose you use the quote button under his/her post from the post preview box under the reply box (that´s the tricky part, therefore in bold) and if that person has quoted someone else in his/her post, the use of the quote button then quotes only that third person and not the person you wanted to quote. Is that normal?

Thanks

Marin

PS: The question why you don´t just use right the quote button instead of the reply button is justified, but still...

Please ignore. Just testing to see what Marin is talking about.

When you click on the Quote button to answer a post,
the WHOLE post gets quoted, started with the name of the poster, and then any other quotes within that post.

If you want to add a quote later on in YOUR post, you can do the following:
Hit the Quote button from above the message field, which copies

Code: Select all

into your message.
Now copy/paste the text you want between the ] and [ of the two quote groups.
If you want to add the name of the "quoted person" (Marin85 in this case) you have to manipulate the first quote group as follows:

Code: Select all
Well, this is a little bit more complicated observation
You must include the double quote marks on each end of that name.
In the end it looks like this:

OK, I admit I don't quite understand what you are talking about. I pressed the reply button and then I pressed the quote button on my previous post. This is what I got (but I also got an error that only one level of quoting is allowed).

Code: Select all
Please ignore. Just testing to see what Marin is talking about.

RealBlackStuff, thanks for that, actually this is indeed what I´m doing all the time. What I was referring to in my previous post, is a slightly different scenario, namely using that quote button:
Image
If I had used this quote button (note this is after using the reply feature), I would have quoted only myself like this:
Marin85 wrote:Well, this is a little bit more complicated observation
My point is that using the quote button after using the reply button cuts off the (non-quoting) words of the quoted person, if he or she has quoted someone else, and repeats the quote of that someone else. So, if I had used the quote button like in the pic to quote RealBlackStuff, the output of it in my reply box would have looked like this

Code: Select all
Well, this is a little bit more complicated observation
However, if I had used the quote button from the very beginning on, it would have quoted the whole post of RealBlackStuff and I would have to cut off my quote from it due to the quoting limitations.

Did anyone count how often the word "quote" was used? :D

@basketb: Exactly! I would get only the third person´s words quoted (i.e. in your case only my own words, but not yours). I don´t know why it makes difference if one uses the quote feature right away or after using the reply button.

Maybe it's another browser-related fluke (just like the (non)dancing ), as the quote button works (at least for me) correctly.

Did you actually try to quote (by using the quote button) a post that is quoting another post after having used the reply button? (It´s possible that it´s just my browser...again..., or maybe I didn´t understand you correctly, so I confirmed incorrectly...)

Thanks

Seems that phpBB V3 does not like nested quotes...
Hmmm.

Nested quoting is not big of a virtue anyway.

EDIT: I´ll try to reproduce the problem again to see if it still persists...

It seems I read somewhere where there is an admin setting in phpBB3 to control the amount of nesting allowed in a quote. This may have been set by one of the admins.

I know that excessive nesting is frowned on, and has been moderated on in the old forum. Some forum members felt they had to quote everything they replied to - when this really isn't the case. Personally I try to trim out unnecessary content when quoting another. Usually it is only a portion of what they said that I am replying to.

Yup, this is the case here too. While you can certainly write some very nested quoting in your reply box, you are not going to be permitted to submit that post. Only one level quoting is allowed as of now :)
