SSD or Compact Flash HD in T4x, anyone already ?

#1 Post by mouse@cheese.storage » Wed Jan 21, 2009 9:09 pm

Dear all,

Since I own a T43p with failing HD, and that is one with 7200rpm and IDE interface, which are hard to find and if so very expensive ... :(, I am considering whether it would be a better option to buy an IDE to compact flash adapter or a solid state drive with IDE interface as a replacement.
Does anyone of you have experience with this, and if so, what specific type of device(s) did you put into your machine ?
Many thanks in advance for your comments,

Regards,

WM

I have been using this SSD in my T42 as the primary drive:

http://ec.transcendusa.com/product/Item ... 32GSSD25-M

From real world usage, read is a bit faster than HDD (around 50MB/s) but write is slower than HDD at around 15MB/s copying a big file to itself. Unlike HDD's power consumption going up and down with huge spikes, this SSD is very stable at power consumption. Idle power consumption is about the same as HDD.

With the SSD, + TPFanControl, T42 is silent 99% of the time when surfing web and listening to music.

Won't a CF card die a rather quick death if it is being used as a hard drive and all the swapping that Windows does?

I've been reading about those Compact Flash adapters on the X## thread, but can't find nothing especific for the T4# series. No one tried it yet or is a failed experience?

In my researches I've found this:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Compact_Flash_boot_drive

some windows tuning there.

Currently I'm evaluting to get a 2.5" PATA 44-pin to 1.8" SATA II Adapter
to install an Intel 1.8" X18-M SATA II 80GB SDD inside a T42p.
I'm looking for an adapter similar to this
http://en.esskabel.de/adapter/datasheet ... 5-case/77/
but with an 1.8" SATA II connector on the inside, instead of the ZIF connector.

Any hints and tips would be very appreciated.

Thought I'd bring this thread back FROM THE DEAD!!!!

Anyone else have an SSD in their notebook? There's a local Transcend shop which should sell their full range of stuff. Quite tempted to stick the 32/64GB models in my T42 (soon to be retired and replaced by an X301) and use it at home as a netbook, then use the current 60GB HDD for backing up other crap.

I have a PATA Samsung SLC SSD in my T60 ultrabay as my only hdd installed and it works great. Will keep you updated in my upcoming T60 review. As far as I know, the ultrabay hdd adapters are interchangeable between T4 and T6 series.

One of the newer and faster Transcend SSD was benchmarked in this thread:

It is a nice unit for the price.

Thanks, the info in that thread looks like it'll be very useful.

I guess I should probably upgrade to 2GB RAM first though.

I have a T43P. If I put the Transcend TS32GSSD25-M 2.5" 32GB PATA MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) in a PATA Ultrabay 2nd HDD adapter and run it as a primary boot drive, then put say a 250GB PATA drive in the regular hard drive bay as a data storage drive, can both run together and will that combination avoid the 2010 boot error?

Haven't done that yet but likely it will not trigger a 2010 error. In this case choice is much wider since you can use a SATA tray.

Has anyone tried the strategy from the prior post, booting from an ultrabay ssd in the t43 series machines? If the primary drive slot is not used for a boot drive, will it give the 2010 error with an ssd?

I read in this forums that the Ultrabay HDDs are always accepted - from any manufacturer. Only the primary hdd is checked if it is in the whitelist.
