memory slots in ibm r 50e series
hi
i am using ibm r50e series thinkpad. i need to upgrade the memory which is currently 256 mb.
can anyone tell me that how many memory slots does r50e series has,
how much upgrade can i make i.e. 1gb or 2 gb
does it has ddr or ddr2 type memory
will it work fine if i upgrade it by 1 gb and additionally use 256 mb of previous memory
how much effect wud be reflected on performance of think pad
thanks
Rachit

Could you please post the 7-character model number of your R50e so we could guide you in the correct direction?

Re: memory slots in ibm r 50e series
I don't think it matters in this case, George. All R50e models were exactly the same when it comes to design and chipset.
The R50e has two RAM slots. One at the bottom of the machine (accessible by removing one screw) and one underneath the keyboard (accessible by removing the keyboard - 3 screws).
It takes DDR-333 (PC2700) RAM. DDR400 (PC3200) will also work, but downclock to DDR333 speeds.
DDR modules only came up to 1GB per stick, so the maximum for this machine would be 2GB. My neighbor recently did such a 256MB->2GB upgrade and (suprise, suprise), discovered night and day difference in performance.
If your machine has 256MB, it means it has one stick (I don't think R50e's ever came with 128MB sticks). This stick would be in the primary slot (underneath the keyboard) and the other slot (bottom of machine) should be free. This means you can upgrade to 1.25GB just by adding a single 1GB stick and without having to disassemble the computer (if you feel uncomfortable with that).

I believe (maybe I'm wrong) that some R50e units sported Celeron CPUs and 533Mhz FSB...

Try this guy on eBay, that's a nice price and I've bought RAM from them before:

Good luck.
