anyone using usb wi-fi "N" dongle / router?

#1 Post by sjh953 » Fri Jan 23, 2009 3:42 am

I've been trying to figure out how to boost the wi-fi speeds on my T42p (2373-Q1U). Right now, I'm connecting successfully using the built-in wi-fi card and a D-Link DIR-524 "G" router. Only issue: I want faster.

Last year I tried, and failed, to connect via a PCMCIA slot wi-fi "N" card, the D-Link DWA-645, and the DIR-615 router. Only later did I realize that the T42p's 16-bit bus did not support "N" speeds anyway; I needed 32-bit. I've since read that the DIR-615 has a fairly pathetic reliability record, and is problematic for many users.

I'm ready to try again. This time, I'm looking at the DWA-140 RangeBooster Draft N Wireless USB Adapter, plus the DIR-625 Rangebooster N Router. D-Link lists these as being made to use together. I'm not anxious to have a USB dongle hanging off the side of the computer, but would be willing to go along if the speed increase pans out.

I'm wondering whether anyone is using this type of set-up with a T42-class machine. If so, are you getting "N" speeds? Is it a worthwhile upgrade over the built-in card? Is the software installation simple; can I switch back to the built-in card easily? Range is not really an issue since my computer and router are only about 10 feet apart.

For the record, I'm using XP Pro SP2.

Thanks for the help. I'm open to any suggestions. It's OK to tell me I'm wasting my time.

These are commercial products so they should work. I am using a very cheap Airlink101 AP with Lenovo/Atheros 11n miniExpress card, Airlink USB, Airlink PCCard and Ralink miniPCI card in several Thinkpads; all work fine.
