X301 New Purchase - Initial Comments

#1 Post by Nifill » Fri Jan 23, 2009 4:04 pm

Have been using my new X301 since Xmas so I thought I'd share with you my experiences so far;
Purchased an X301 2GB with 128GB of SSD to which I added additional 2GB mem and Vista Business.

For those in UK, after analysis of range of Lenovo models offering apparently similar configs at widely differing prices, I can confirm that the Lenovo Topseller models ( 2776 range) can provide just what you need at a much lower price that 2774.

I purchased 2776-LEG, model NRFLEUK, which as standard config includes camera, 1 x 2G mem module, 128GB SSD, Optical Drive, 6 Cell Battery, 3G WAN with Vodafone SIMM, and 30 day free 3G service trial.

I also purchased the USB port replicator which enables me to connect to my LAN, 17" display, Ext USB drive and KVM switch using just 2 cables ( 1 x USB and ext power).
The USB port replicator enables me to extend the 13.3" X301 screen to the 17" LCD display runnimg at 1280 x 1024.
Very useful for extending desktop screen space and enabling multiple concurrent windows.

I beleive the performance is very good. I'm running std Office environment ie Exel 2007, Word 2007 , Powepoint 2007 and Outlook, often concurrently. Occasionally I go back to fire-up my previous X41 ( to access Visio), it now seems very slow in comparison.
Most noteworthy features of this device are:
Boot time- SSD enables cold start to IE browser in 45 secs ( with Kaspersky AV configured) The X41 took approx 4 mins by comparison.
The built-in 3G is extremely useful if your'e on the road.. who needs a "Blueberry" when you have this ?

One comment, with Vista Business & Office 2007 and approx 10 GB of personal data I'm consuming 45GB of Mass Storage already. If you include first R&R backup to SSD partition, I've consumed 62GB of SSD space...
