x31 battery problem

My beloved X31 has started to hang/instant shutdown when using a battery. I have tried several? Any ideas why?

There's no power coming from the battery. Could be duff battery, or duff interconnection.

Boot up on mains power and check the battery state (via Control Panel if there's not the appropriate icon on the task bar).
