speec to text

#1 Post by henrym » Sun Jan 25, 2009 4:53 pm

I'm not sure where this topic fits but here goes. I have a new X61 and have been trying to get speech to text. I "trained" the computer for my voice recognition but cannot find how to convert an actual audio file to text. I've looked all over the OneNote information, visited their blogs and even looked at the Microsoft site FAQs but nothing I see helps me even get to 1st base. I hope someone has a directon for me to explore.
Thanks
Henry

Well, I don´t know if this is that simply. Dragon Naturally Speaking seems to me to be the best solution available out there as of now.

I set this up for a colleague's computer running XP maybe a year or two ago, so I'm not too sure of the specifics, but there should be a speech-to-text option in Microsoft Word. I have OneNote too but I'd use Word; it's what my colleague was using, and it worked fine after a bit of training.

Speech stuff just does not work. It has been around for years and they still can't get it to work correctly. It's in our phones, computers, cars, gps units, and anything that can talk back. My phone never gets names right when I speak them. Vista's speech command program which is better than anything I've used, is too limited and has lots of hiccups. I don't think and speech to text or speech recognition program will ever work as advertised. (It would of taken me 3 times longer for me to say thing to the computer than to type it.)
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

I installed Dragon 10 and used it once with fairly accurate results. The next time I tried to use it I got this error message.

SDAPI Error 1: Error: [s:\mrec17\11988\mrecutil\realdf.cpp 2673 mrecutil\realdf 1] SDApi_GetFileSupportType: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking10\Users\henry holden\current\General_\general.voc

I went to their site and this is the "fix' they said. Go to this location and see if any digital recorder had something (I didn't write it down).

Windows 2000/XP/2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking10

I went to Windows 2000/XP/2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users ... but there is no Application Data\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking10
that appears. I checked all the folders and could not find that portion of the location.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks
Henry

Open the folder options menu and enable "Show Hidden Files and Folders". You will then be able to access that location.
